Nithya Menen debuted in Telugu film industry with Nandini Reddy's rom-com, 'Ala Modalaindi' (2011) co-starring
Nani. Despite being a low-budget project and a slow start at the box office, the film eventually became a massive success and also attained cult classic status. This breakthrough role didn't just transform her career; it also influenced her personal journey, introducing a refreshingly natural and grounded leading lady to the industry. Even after fifteen years, this film continues to be a significant milestone in Telugu cinema, holding a special place in Nithya's heart as the project that started it all.
Nithya Menen’s emotional message
Marking 15 years of 'Ala Modalaindi', Nithya Menen took to Instagram to share a heartfelt note saying: “‘Ala modalaindi’ means ‘And so, it began’. The ‘leela’ of the Universe I guess, giving me a movie named like that. A movie where it all really began. @nandureddyy and I talk all the time about what it was like back then. Nobody knew who we were, nobody cared. Most people didn’t understand at all what we were trying to make. We were attempting to make a rom-com, which I think until then was not done at all in Telugu, and most other languages as well. So no one cared.”
Nithya Menen on memories of freedom and simplicity
Her post beautifully captures the innocence of that phase, long chats at Irani Chai after shoots, eating the same Subway sandwiches every day, and rewriting scenes just minutes before filming.
Nithya recalled how the lack of pressure allowed the team to experiment freely and stay true to themselves. She described an event that had remained indelibly inscribed in her mind, when Nandini nonchalantly told her to just walk into a Subway store all by herself, playfully saying that such liberty wouldn't last very long. For her, being recognized seemed to be a ridiculous idea back then.
Menen continued, "We went to Irani Chai most days after shoot and just chilled there until late, ate Subway sandwiches for lunch. I even remember our orders . It was the exact same order everyday. We improvised so much on the spot. Rewrote scenes 15 mins before shooting it.It was amazing. No pressure. None of us was ‘somebody’ , so we did what we wanted. We were fully ourselves.
One day we stopped at a tiny Subway outlet by the side of a very busy road to pick up lunch before shoot. And Nandini told me to go inside and get it. “You won’t be able to walk freely into any restaurant like this any more. Go buy it yourself “ she said.
It sounded absurd to me. It never, ever , ever occurred to me that I could be recognised one day or that people might want to see me. I didn’t really want it. My plan was to do small off beat films , be relatively unknown , be free, take walks , sit in cafés by myself and read …. BUT . then . came . Ala Modalaindi . And nothing was the same ever again .
And so , it began indeed .
15 years of Ala Modalaindi !"
When everything changed forever for Nithya Menen
Nithya Menen admitted she never dreamed of fame. Her plan was simple, to act in small, offbeat films, remain unknown, walk freely, and sit alone in cafés reading books. But 'Ala Modalaindi' changed everything. As she poignantly concluded, “BUT. then. came. Ala Modalaindi. And nothing was the same ever again. And so, it indeed began.”
