Must watch horror-comedy films of Tollywood

Horror movies, in general, are filled with suspense, some spine-chilling moments and an eerie music. However, with nothing new to offer, filmmakers are blending genres to give the audience something refreshing. And that is when the genre of horror-comedy came into being. Following the trend, Tollywood has, over the time, produced some movies that not only scare the hell out of us but also makes us laugh. Here we give you a rundown of such movies...

2/7

Prema Katha Chitram

Said to be the first of its kind genre, ‘Prema Katha Chitram’ was directed by Maruthi Dasari and starred Sudheer Babu and Nanditha in lead roles. It also featured Praveen and Saptagiri in key roles. In the movie, a group of four youngsters plans a combined flawless suicide for being a failure in their respective lives. Saptagiri and Praveen’s part in the second half is a great comic relief, providing plenty of laughs as the ghost’s outrage at its wicked best. While ‘Prema Katha Chitram’ may make your skin crawl, it’s also very funny.

3/7

Kanchana

‘Kanchana’ and ‘Kanchana 2’ are the official sequels of ‘Muni’, directed by Raghava Lawrence. These two sequels were super hit except, ‘Muni’, which fared averagely at the box-office. Raghava Lawrence is not only a talented dance choreographer but also an accomplished director. He made his directorial debut with Akkineni Nagarjuna starrer ‘Mass’ in 2004. Lawrence’s concept is about a young man who gets scared by ghosts, possessed by a ghost and behaves weirdly. The movie is about the revenge of a ghost who enters into the body of a scared young man. While there are plenty of spooky moments, it also has much laughter evoking moments.

4/7

Geethanjali

The 2004 horror comedy film marked the directorial debut of Raj Kiran and it was a hit. Anjali had played the dual role as Geethanjali and Ushanjali, both are sisters in the film. Srinivasa Reddy made his lead debut with this film which also starred Satyam Rajesh, Shakalaka Shankar, Rao Ramesh and Brahmanandam in crucial roles. ‘Geethanjali’ tells the story of a young office-goer Geethanjali who gets raped by her managing director and commits suicide but later comes back as a ghost in her sisters’ body to take revenge from the manager. However, post interval, the film takes a U-turn, making it a comedy-horror film.

5/7

Raju Gari Gadhi

Anchor-turned-director Omkar’s second venture ‘Raju Gari Gadhi’ was one of his best in his career. He introduced his younger brother Ashwin Babu with this film which also stars Dhanya Balakrishna, Chethan Cheenu, Posani Krishna Murali, Dhanraj, Rajiv Kanakala, and Vidyullekha Raman in significant roles. Dhanraj and Shakalaka Shankar’s creepy comedy is the major highlight of the film. In fact, there’s is not much of a horror in the film. The moment when Shakalaka Shankar faces ghost is really scary and at the same time extremely hilarious. With all the fear elements, ‘Raju Gari Gadhi’ has its share of funny moments.

6/7

Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada

A Nikhil Siddhartha directorial, ‘Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada’ was one of the blockbusters of his career. A woman elopes before her marriage, however, meets with an accident and dies. However, her soul then searches for another body so that she can meet her eternal love. Director Vi Anand knocks out of the established genre classic. The film boasts of its amazing screenplay and wonderful performances. Much of the film’s humour aims directly at knowing it all comedy fans, with its biggest laughs when addressing the ghost lover.

7/7

Anando Brahma

It’s a laugh-out-loud funny film with creepy and ludicrous scenes of a group of souls frightening humans in the bungalow with their scary acts. The Mahi V Raghav directorial comes up with a different subject which induces fear as well as tickles your funny bones.
