​Happy Women’s Day! Five upcoming women-centric Telugu films that will have women in powerful roles

Women-oriented movies have always seen a good run at the box office and Telugu filmmakers have always a keen eye for such kind of subjects. Indeed, such films also have strong female characters. People also love watching women as strong female leads in films which are also absolutely crucial to a film. Women in female-oriented films have also seen a fair share of author-backed roles so far.

As the world is celebrating International Women’s Day, we bring you the five upcoming women-centric Telugu films that will have women in powerful roles.

​Keerthy Suresh - Director Narendra film

Actress Keerthy Suresh who garnered positive reviews for her performance in the biopic of legendary yesteryear actress Savitri, ‘Mahanati’, has signed a woman-centric film with debutant Narendra. The makers have made an official announcement regarding the same recently. The actress has received various offers after a solid performance in ‘Mahanati’, but due to the likeness of author-backed roles, she finally opted to play in the female-oriented film. The movie will be produced by Mahesh Koneru of East Coast Productions. The producer is known for making films such as ‘Naa Nuvve’ and ‘118’.

​Anjali’s Geethanjali 2

‘Geethanjali’, starring Anjali, Srinivasa Reddy, Rao Ramesh, has not only managed to pull crowds to theatres but has also crossed the Rs 40 crore mark in the long run. And this success at the box office is making the makers consider a sequel to the film. One of the producers of the movie has made an announcement regarding the sequel. With the huge success of the film, several people from the industry have been encouraging them to work on a sequel since the film’s concept and characters received so much love from the audience. The sequel will be directed by an NRI and produced by Kona Venkat, MVV Satyanarayana under the banner of MVV Pictures.

Samantha’s O Baby Yentha Sakkagunnave

Director Nandini Reddy has been inspired by a South Korean film ‘Miss Granny’ and she has roped Samantha Akkineni to play the titular role in the film. The 31-year-old actress underwent a complete makeover for the film and it went on to the floors recently. She will reportedly be seen as a 70-year-old woman in the film. The heroine-centric film is being bankrolled by People's Media Factory in association with Suresh Productions and Sunita Tati. Samantha’s last film ‘U Turn’ was also a female-oriented film, in which she played a reporter who investigates an uncover truth.

​Tamannaah’s That Is Mahalakshmi

‘That is Mahalakshmi’ is the remake of the 2014 Hindi flick ‘Queen’ directed by Vikas Bahl. Tamannaah Bhatia has been roped in to reprise the role of Kangana Ranaut in the film. Tamannaah completely transformed into a homely village belle who heads Europe to enjoy her honeymoon after marriage, finds herself in freedom and joy. It is expected that Tamannaah’s performance will get appreciation from all quarters and it would one of her most memorable roles in films. ‘That is Mahalakshmi’ is directed by Prashanth Varma and produced by Manu Kumaran under the banner of Mediente International Films Ltd.

​Nithya Menen’s Praana

Nithya Menen starrer ‘Praana’ is a multilingual film, release in Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, and Telugu. Nithya Menen has played an English writer focuses on social issues lives in her own trepidations. The Malayalam version was released on January 18 and it is considered to be one of Nithya Menen’s most impressive and iconic performances so far. The actor, who has already proved her mettle in films (‘Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde’, ‘Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju’, ‘Ok Bangaram’ and ‘Merupu’), delivered yet another terrific performance that is sure to dominate the next year’s award ceremonies.
