From Nandamuri Balakrishna’s ‘Aditya 369’ to 'Ismart Shankar' – Here’s a look at the most popular science-fiction South Indian films!

Science-fiction thrillers as a genre have mostly proved to be a safe bet for filmmakers and worked very well with all types of audiences. Not just in Tollywood or other south Indian industries, but in every other language film industry, it worked very well. It was Singeetham Srinivas Rao’s ‘Aditya 369’ that first tasted a huge success in Tollywood and it remains one of the all-time classics till today!

In this context, let us see some of the best South Indian sci-fi films that have not only scored brilliantly at the box-office but received rave reviews for their performances and special effects, etc. Here’s a look!

​Aditya 369 (1991)

While Aditya 369 is about a time machine with which the characters travel back and forth between the past and the future. It was written and directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and is often considered to be the first Indian film on time travel. The film also deals with exploratory, dystopian and apocalyptic themes. The film was later dubbed into Apporva Sakthi 369 in Tamil and Mission 369 in Hindi.

​'Hollywood' (2002)

‘Hollywood’ is a 2002 Kannada science fiction film written by Upendra and directed by Dinesh Babu. The film starred Upendra in triple roles as Surendra, Upendra and US 47 (A Robot). The film was shot entirely in Australia and released under the same title in Telugu in 2003. Upendra was the first Indian actor to portray the role of an Android robot that falls in love with a girl and tries to eliminate its creator. Later Tamil director S.Shankar has made a similar film on large scale with a similar storyline under the title ‘Enthiran' in 2020.

​Rajinikanth's 'Robo (2010)'

The film carries forward the man-machine war through interesting twists and turns and creates a lively love triangle between scientist Rajnikanth, medical student Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and robot Rajnikanth. The robot is the perfect getaway film, which gives us a high with its heady over-the-top Indian flavour.

Suriya's '24' (2016)

Directed by Vikram Kumar, the movie with a unique story of time machine features superstar Suriya in triple roles along with Samantha and Nithya Menen. Suriya himself produced the film under his home banner of 2D Entertainment. After showcasing his versatility with films such as ‘Ghajini’, ‘Brothers’, ‘7th Sense’, etc., Suriya mesmerized the audience with his high energy performance in the movie.

​‘iSmart Shankar’ (2019)

Though ismart Shankar is not full-time serious science fiction but more an action film, it had a new concept of transferred memories. The film is said to be inspired by the 2016 American film ‘Criminal’ and 2017 English film ‘iBoy’ It has received praise from the critics for its performances than its storyline and registered blockbuster hit at the box-office.

Still, there were movies like ‘Yevadu’ (Telugu) and ‘Thani Oruvan’ (Tamil) that had a science-fictional theme in the backdrop if not fully and did well at the box office.
