Double Bonanza: 4 Highly-anticipated multi-starrers in Tollywood

What was a successful formula in the 70s & 80s and almost alien during the 90s & last decade, is turning out to be the flavour of the season in present-day Tollywood. During the peak of their careers, legendary actors like NTR and ANR mesmerised all Telugu viewers by sharing screen-space in many mythological and commercial flicks which ran to packed houses. This trend was later continued by Krishna, Krishnam Raju and Sobhan Babu as well. Popularly termed as multi-starrers, these double-hero films are known to draw large number of cinegoers to the theatres, owing to the crazy combination.

During the recent couple of years, several multi-starrer films in Tollywood have tested their fate at the box-office. A row of them are currently on floors and the most expensive film ever made in India ‘2.O’ is all set to release at the end of this month. Starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar as the protagonist & antagonist, the science-fiction film is the spiritual successor to Shankar’s 2010 blockbuster flick ‘Robo’. SS Rajamouli’s biggest multi-starrer ‘RRR’ has also been officially launched with the regular shoot expected to commence soon.

Peep down for 4 highly-anticipated multi-starrers in Telugu cinema.

2.O (RAJINIKANTH & AKSHAY KUMAR)

Helmed on a massive budget of over 400 crore making it the country’s most expensive film till date, ‘2.O’ is the spiritual successor to ‘Robo’ directed by Shankar Shanmugham in 2010. Slated for a massive worldwide release on November 29, the science-fiction thriller has Superstar Rajinikanth reprising his role of Chitti with Bollywood star hero Akshay Kumar playing the antagonist. Amy Jackson is essaying a pivotal role in the film and she looks eye-popping in the robot costume.

Boarding breath-taking VFX and mind-boggling action sequences, ‘2.O’ showcases how a dead scientist turns into evil and takes his revenge on all humans using their mobile phones and electronic equipment. ‘2.O’ is the first Indian film to be shot entirely on 3D.

RRR (JUNIOR NTR & RAM CHARAN)

After becoming a national phenomenon with the stupendous success of Baahubali duology, acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli has launched his next film starring Junior NTR and Ram Charan in lead roles. Touted as the biggest multi-starrer in modern-day Telugu cinema, the 300-crore budget film tentatively titled as RRR has been officially launched a week ago. While the genre & storyline is strictly kept under wraps, details regarding the technical crew of the film are out. Almost all technicians who sweated it out for Baahubali franchise are going to reprise their roles in RRR. The first schedule is expected to commence from November 19 with a massive action block.

F2: Fun and Frustration (VENKATESH AND VARUN TEJ)

Basking in the glory of three successive superhits, writer-cum-director Anil Ravipudi is currently helming one of the craziest multi-starrers in the T-town. Titled ‘F2: Fun and Frustration’, the out-and-out comedy entertainer casts Victory Venkatesh and Varun Tej as the male leads with Tamannaah and Mehreen playing their leading ladies. Bankrolled by Dil Raju with ‘Rockstar’ Devi Sri Prasad composing the music, ‘F2’ is gearing up for a festive release on Sankranthi. The first look posters are generating good curiosity for the film.

Venky Mama (VENKATESH AND NAGA CHAITANYA)

Venkatesh has surely taken multi-starrers a little bit more seriously than his fellow senior stars. After sharing screen-space with popular stars like Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan and Ram, the Daggubati scion is all set to join hands with his nephew Naga Chaitanya for ‘Venky Mama’ which will be directed by ‘Jai Lava Kusa’ fame Bobby.
