Aakhari Poratam, Manam, and Oopiri : Five box office hit movies of Nagarjuna Akkineni

Nagarjuna Akkineni is gearing up for the release of his much-awaited movie Kuberaa, alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Dhanush.

The trio were recently seen promoting the movie in Mumbai, where Nagarjuna made remarks about Rashmika’s box office success over the past three years. He stated that no one has had Rs 2000 crore films like her and praised her filmography from the last few years. As the actor prepares for the release of the movie on June 20, let’s take a look at some of Nagarjuna’s most successful box office films.

​Aakhari Poratam


Released in 1988, Aakhari Poratam is a romantic action drama directed and scripted by K. Raghavendra Rao. The film features a star-studded cast including Nagarjuna, Sridevi, and Suhasini Mani Ratnam, with music composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja. Recognised for its mainstream appeal, the film was showcased in the Indian Panorama section at the 12th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Aakhari Poratam emerged as a commercial success and is widely regarded as Nagarjuna’s breakthrough box office hit.

​Soggade Chinni Nayana

Soggade Chinni Nayana is a supernatural drama released in 2016, marking the directorial debut of Kalyan Krishna Kurasala. The film features Nagarjuna in dual roles. Ramya Krishna and Lavanya Tripathi played the female leads, with Nassar, Sampath Raj, Mahadevan, and Brahmanandam in pivotal supporting roles. Blending mythology, humour, and family emotions, the film resonated with audiences and became a commercial hit. According to DNA India, the movie grossed approximately Rs 83 crore.

​Bangarraju


Nagarjuna Akkineni’s 2022 film Bangarraju is his second collaboration with Kalyan Krishna Kurasala on a supernatural thriller. It serves as a sequel to the 2016 hit Soggade Chinni Nayana. The film introduces a fresh dynamic by casting real-life father and son, Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya, in lead roles. Ramya Krishna and Krithi Shetty also joined the cast. Bangarraju follows the celestial return of a spirited zamindar as he teams up with his grandson to resolve unfinished business and protect their village from dark forces.

Industry sources report that Bangarraju garnered over Rs 65 crore at the box office.

​Oopiri


The 2016 film Oopiri made a strong impression as a heartwarming comedy-drama. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, the movie marked Tamil actor Karthi’s Telugu debut, starring alongside Nagarjuna and Tamannaah Bhatia. The story revolves around the unlikely friendship between Vikramaditya, a wealthy man paralysed from the neck down, and Seenu, a spirited ex-convict hired as his caretaker. It also featured Prakash Raj, Jayasudha, Ali, Vivek, Kalpana, and Tanikella Bharani in key roles. Oopiri is an official remake of the 2011 French film The Intouchables. Reports indicate that the film grossed nearly Rs 98 crore.

​Manam


Manam, released in 2014, became one of the most celebrated films in Tollywood. Directed by Vikram Kumar, the film brought together Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Nagarjuna, and Naga Chaitanya. The ensemble cast also included Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Shriya Saran. The film’s unique narrative structure, which moves through different time periods up to the year 2013, struck a chord with audiences for its emotional depth and innovative storytelling.

Shot on a budget of Rs 28 crore, Manam became both a critical and commercial success, grossing around Rs 62 crore at the box office.
