6 Reasons why the Tamil-dubbed films are NOT working in Telugu States

There were tens of Tamil films every year that enjoyed similar success and box-office collections here in Telugu states. But the above tradition seems to be coming down in Andhra Pradesh, especially after COVID. Even superhit Tamil movies like ‘PS1’ and ‘PS2’ have fallen flat here due to some unknown reasons. We have tried to decode the reasons for the downfall of a dubbed Tamil movie. Please have a look, and if there are any suggestions, please leave them in the below comment box.

Remakes have no value in the OTT age

Tamil remakes of Telugu, Hindi, or foreign films have no value. Earlier, if there was any superhit film in Telugu, Tamil makers used to purchase the movie rights to the same and make the film in Tamil. This is used to avoid the Tamil dubbing market for a super Telugu film. But now, due to the advent of the Internet and OTT, Tamil audiences too have started watching successful films in other languages on OTT rather than remakes, and even the Telugu audience has started watching the original version of Tamil remake films such as ‘Ghajini’, ‘3 Idiots," and films like that.

There were several Tamil films that were remakes of either Hindi films or foreign language films that used to get dubbed in Telugu and enjoy a large market share.

Eg: ‘Avai Shanmugi’, ‘Arunachalam’, ‘Sathyam Shivam," etc.

Visual grandeur

Telugu films have always had stunning visuals and production values compared to Tamil cinema. With the exception of a few big Tamil stars, the production values of a typical Tamil cinema have been very low due to its market size or its makers.

Whereas the colourful production values and presentation of even a small-budget Telugu film have started getting more recognition than a dull, poorly made film. Therefore, audiences in other languages started to watch a decently made, quality film rather than a low-budget, half-baked movie, even if it had a great storyline.

Gained star value of Telugu actors

Tamil actors always had a greater following in Telugu states than the Telugu stars there due to the dubbing market for Tamil movies here in Telugu states. Starting with K. Balachander, many Tamil filmmakers have dubbed superhit Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan movies in Telugu.

Which was later followed by a few other Tamil actors such as Vikram, Suriya, Karthi, Simbu, Siva Karthikeyan, and others.

Since Telugu films generally don’t get dubbed into Tamil, even a top Telugu star used to hardly have any market in Tamil Nadu. But now, with the Pan-India boom and the success of Telugu films such as ‘Baahubali’, ‘Pushpa," "RRR," and a few others, Telugu actors have started enjoying fandom in other languages, and the actors too have started expanding their market, which indirectly affected Tamil actors’ stardom in Tollywood.

Tollywood directors making Tamil cinema

It’s been very long since a Telugu director directed a Tamil film after the Black and White era. Now several Tollywood directors have started directing Tamil films in Chennai and are delivering superhits such as Sudha Kongara with Suriya, Vamshi Paidipally with Vijay, Venky Atluri with Dhanush, and a few other directors on this line with the happening Tamil stars there.

The Newly found movie market

Though Tamil filmmakers have been dubbing their films into Telugu for a long time and are minting money here, The entry of Telugu dubs into other languages had put a check on the Tamil market in terms of its box-office collections, market size, and collection records. Telugu films have been getting immense love for their content not just from the North but from Malayalam and Kannada languages too, as well as from foreign countries such as the US, UK, and Japan.

Market size and box-office numbers

Contrary to a Tamil remake of a Telugu film, a Telugu remake of a blockbuster Tamil film was not possible, especially the big star ones, as many of the Tamil stars used to dub their Tamil films in Telugu and release them simultaneously here. Therefore, the Tamil market and its box-office collections used to look large despite having a lesser number of theatres, ticket rates, and entertainment taxes compared to Telugu films. Which has been overtaken by Telugu films now due to its expanded market.
