Why Yennai Arindhaal could be a hit or miss!

The fans have already started celebrating Ajith's 'Yennai Arindhaal' when the advance bookings for the film opened yesterday. This speaks volumes of the star's fan following and the expectations on the film. With only a couple of days to go for the film hit the screens, here's why we think the film could turn out be on the biggest hits of the year.

Why Yennai Arindhaal could be a hit or miss!

Ajith-Gautham Menon combination
This is the first the time that acclaimed director Gautham Menon has teamed up with Thala Ajith. While Ajith's films have always garnered an amazing opening weekend, Gautham Menon's films have always picked up extremely well after a decent opening in comparison to a star actor's film. This combination of massive opening for Ajith's mass and the pick up for Gautham Menon's class is expected to work out big for the film to make it a huge hit.

Too much hype
Sometimes, the excessive expectations on a film can be a burden by itself and can make the film seem less impressive. There is no better example for this than Suriya's Anjaan, which was massively hyped up that fans felt cheated when they saw that it was an usual revenge saga. Rajinikanth's 'Lingaa' also got extra criticism because of the extra publicity. The same thing happened with 'I' as well, to an extent. So, as we saw with Ajith's Billa II, even if the film is just above average, it could result in a backlash from disappointed fans.

Delay as a disguise
The film was initially planned to be released for the Pongal weekend, but was later delayed due to post production work. Shankar's 'I' starring Vikram and Amy Jackson hit the screens for Pongal. The delay in release of 'Yennai Arindhaal' has only ensured that the film will not be fighting it out with any other big films for the first week. Though Dhanush's 'Shamitabh' will hit the screens on Feb 6, it wouldn't have so many screens to pose a threat.

Length of film
Going by latest trend, films which have a running time of close to 3 hours or more haven't met the expectations of the fans. All those films that have been complained to be lengthy have not done well at the box office, including Rajinikanth's latest film 'Lingaa' and Shankar's 'I'. Ajith's 'Yennai Arindhaal', which was earlier reported to have a running time of 2 hours 56 minutes, has now been trimmed to 2 hours 42 minutes even before the release. This could well work in favour of the film or backfire, since there is a buzz that the trimmed version is only for India, and the US audience will get to see the complete version.

Gautham Menon-Harris Jayaraj
After parting ways in 2008 after Suriya starrer 'Vaaranam Aayiram', the successful duo of Gautham Menon and Harris Jayaraj have joined hands once again for Ajith starrer flick. Harris also works in an Ajith film for the first time like the director. While the songs have struck a chord with the fans to an extent, inside reports suggests that the BGM for the film has turned out to be awesome taking the scenes to a whole new level.

Why Yennai Arindhaal could be a hit or miss!

Gautham Menon's cop films
Acclaimed director Gautham Menon has once again opted for cop movie after his love story 'Neethaane En Ponvasantham'. His earlier cop movies, 'Kaakha Kaakha' with Suriya and 'Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu' with Kamal Haasan have been huge hits. The expectations of giving another hit cop movie weighs heavily on him. Comparisons with these hits films will be inevitable, which could be a negative for the film even if it falls short of expectation even one tiny bit.

Why Yennai Arindhaal could be a hit or miss!

Ajith-Trisha
Pretty damsel Trisha who recently got engaged is pairing up with Ajith for the fourth time after Ji, Kireedam and Mankatha. Their chemistry has always been received well by audience and it has only grown with each film adding to the film's success. Going by the success of 'Mankatha', their pairing in the this film is expected make an impact on the audience.

No punchlines
There has been a lot of talk about Ajith not wanting any punchlines in the film and wanting it to be film in Gautham Menon's style. While there have been praises for the actor's commitment and trust on the director, at the end of the day, it's an Ajith film for the star's numerous fans. The fans expect the director's class combined with the star's mass, which could be missing, going by the reports.

Thiagarajan Kumararaja and Sridhar Raghavan as co-writers
It came as a pleasant surprise for many when the Aaranya Kandam's director Thiagarajan Kumararaja's name appeared as a co-writer in the trailer of the film. Given how path-breaking the director's debut film was, this only makes us expect that his contribution to Yennai Arindhaal would have taken it to the next level. The same goes for the other co-writer Sridhar Raghavan, whose work in Bollywood films like Johnny Gaddar and Ek Hasina Thi, was very remarkable.
11/11

Why Yennai Arindhaal could be a hit or miss!

Excessive abuses
With the film being given a U/A certificate, not only does it miss out on tax exemption, but also family audience. While the U/A could be given due to the excessive violence in the film, inside reports suggests that excessive foul language which have been used throughout the film is also a reason. Gautham Menon's films are known to have few swear words in the dialogues, but if it turns out to being used throughout the film, the film could end up losing the family audience.
