Will release delay affect 'Jana Nayagan' OTT deal?
With the theatrical release of Vijay’s Jana Nayagan still under a cloud due to the ongoing legal tussle over its censor certification, the film’s makers informed the Madras High Court on Tuesday that the OTT platform that acquired its digital rights may initiate legal action if the film’ release gets delayed further.
The streaming rights of the film, originally slated for a January 9 theatrical release, have been acquired by Amazon Prime Video. With the film yet to receive its censor certificate, its OTT release plan has also been thrown into disarray.
‘OTT PLATFORM MIGHT THREATEN BUT NOT SUE’Meanwhile, an industry source shares that despite the threat, the OTT platform is not likely to cancel the deal if the film’s theatrical release continues to be uncertain. “The OTT platform might not sue the producer despite its threat to cancel the OTT deal. For instance, Vaa Vaathiyaar had a deal to release the film on OTT in April 2025. The release kept getting delayed and the deal was eventually extended until December 2025. Though OTT sent a termination notice in December 2025, the film’s producer requested 15 more days’ time and released the film on January 14. And the OTT honoured the deal,” the source informs.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the latest Hindi movies, upcoming Hindi movies in 2026 , and Telugu movies.”
