In a refreshingly open and personal interview, actress
Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has talked about her family history and how her views on her parents’ divorce changed throughout her life, maturing with time and wisdom. In an appearance on The Rayane Show with her stepsister Rayane R Mithun, Varalaxmi openly reflected on her experiences and difficulties during her childhood and her evolving thoughts on them over the years. With her refreshing views, Varalaxmi shed light on the concept of stepfamilies, coping mechanisms, and emotional growth.
Varalaxmi recalls years of anger
Recalling the time of her father Sarathkumar’s divorce from her mother, Chaya Devi, Varalaxmi admitted that she had many questions and resentment. She automatically accused actress Radhika, who eventually became her father’s second wife, as a child. Varalaxmi stated that after getting mature and learned through different experiences and therapies she realized that her feeling of anger stemmed from pain and not facts. What she used to think of as aversion later turned into comprehension and she started to accept the bond in a constructive way.
Therapy and maturity reshape Varalaxmi’s bond with her father
Sharing her thoughts on her relationship with her father, Varalaxmi spoke of how it changed over the years. Sarathkumar was married to Chaya Devi in 1981, but they divorced in 2000. He remarried in 2001 to Radhika. “I think I had forgiven my dad [Saraswati's ex-husband] a long time ago,” she said. “Counselling helped me realise relationships don’t work.” While childhood love gave way to anger after the separation, and intensified when her father remarried those emotions eventually settled. According to Varalaxmi, both her parents made choices that ultimately led them to happier lives.
Varalaxmi on her evolving relationship with Radhika
Responding to the question about her early dislike for Radhika, Varalaxmi noted that her views have now changed dramatically. Arguing that most people think a third party is responsible for a marital breakdown, Varalaxmi noted that this was not the case with her marriage. “There were issues anyway before she came into our family,” explained Varalaxmi. While Varalaxmi did not get along with Radhika before, she has now come to accept her. Now, Varalaxmi has a close relationship with her stepmother. Moreover, Radhika has a decent relationship with Varalaxmi’s mother, something that Varalaxmi sees as an example of maturity, understanding, and closure.
