In a show of solidarity within the Tamil film industry, the team behind 'Theri' has delayed the re-release of the Vijay-starrer making way for the smaller films of January 23. The news came as a result of a phone call made by the directors of the competing movies who felt a big re-release would eclipse their movies. Thanu has confirmed that the official date for Theri’s release will be declared on Monday bringing closure to the controversy that has surrounded Tamil cinema in recent days.
Appeals from upcoming filmmakers
The postponement followed public requests made on social media by filmmakers whose projects were scheduled for the same date. Director Mohan G, whose film 'Draupathi 2' is set for a January 23 release, directly appealed to Thanu on X (formerly Twitter) urging him to support emerging teams. In his message, Mohan pointed out Thanu’s long-standing reputation for promoting new producers and directors, and asked that ‘Theri’ be postponed in order to allow equitable access to major screens. The makers of 'Hotspot 2 Much', also releasing that day, echoed similar concerns.
'Theri' makers' response
Responding to these requests, Kalaipuli S Thanu reiterated his company's philosophy. He said that the company's obligation was to inspire and support new filmmakers, promising films, and aspiring producers. That said, Thanu declared that he will postpone the release date of ‘Theri’. His comments were widely viewed as a reminder of his promise to support new talent, rather than engaging in a contest with small-budget films by executing an extravagant re-release.
Industry applause and gratitude
Shortly after the news broke, Mohan G conveyed sincere appreciation to Thanu for accommodating the request, while also thanking Vijay’s fans for their patience. He added that the team would meet the producer in person to express their gratitude. The decision was met with acclaim from industry figures, with producer Suresh Kamatchi describing it as a gesture coming from a “good heart.”Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the
