A dialogue delivered by actor Jiiva in the film 'Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil' has triggered widespread debate on social media. In a particular scene, Jiiva was recorded saying, “படிச்சு படிச்சு சொன்னேன்டா… கண்டிஷன்ஸ் பாலோ பண்ணுங்கடா…” (“I had studied and told you, follow the conditions, did you listen?”), it went on to become a rage in theatres with the words featuring a mass appeal. Later, as the video clip started to spread across social media platforms, and attained political sensitivity. Additionally, the dialogue was compared with an earlier emotional monologue delivered by Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, with respect to the Karur stampede incident.
Jiiva offers a clear clarification
Addressing the controversy during an interaction with the media, Jiiva made his intentions clear. “We insert some jabs in films for set scenes in accordance with the mood of the audience. The director thought it would fit in this particular scene and I delivered the line as per his request,” Jiiva said. Jiiva added that the audience response had been very encouraging. Clarifying his intentions, Jiiva said that he did not mean to offend anyone and that the scene was purely for entertainment purposes. Jiiva requested that people not read it as a political jab or as a personal attack against anyone. “When the film releases on December 1st, people will understand,” Jiiva added. Do you think the actor overstepped his boundaries?
Criticism linked to the Minister's viral speech
The issue gained steam following the propagation of a clip of Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi’s intense reaction to a tragic incident that transpired in Karur over social media. This prompted some viewers to draw comparisons between Jiiva’s line and the real-life incident, accusing the filmmakers of alluding to the situation. A simple, click-bait-inducing line of dialogue soon morphed into a controversial debatable issue owing to its constituent ambiguity.
