Tamil Film Producers Council Elections: Tamil Kumaran wins with record breaking numbers; All eyes on the new era
The election to choose the new office-bearers of the Tamil Film Producers Council for the 2026–2029 term was held in a private college in Anna Nagar, Chennai. As the current team’s tenure ends in April, this election was seen as very important. It took place under the direct supervision of retired Justice Rajeshwaran and witnessed a tough contest between two groups. Out of 1,524 members, 1,171 cast their votes, showing strong interest in the council's functioning. Celebrities like actor Rajinikanth and director Mysskin also came in person to vote, which brought more attention to the event.
The centre of attraction was the presidential election. G. K. M. Tamil Kumaran of the 'Welfare' team won the election by a huge margin, polling a whopping 788 votes. His opponent, Thenandal Murali, received 241 votes. The 527-vote difference clearly showed the strong support Tamil Kumaran enjoyed among the members. This is also said to be the highest number of votes received by any candidate in the history of the Producers Council presidential election. The voting details and results were reported by Nakkheeran.
For the treasurer post, N. Subash Chandrabose won with 609 votes. Sujatha Vijayakumar secured 715 votes and was elected as the joint secretary. In addition, a number of senior producers and newcomers were selected as members of the executive committee. The presence of both middle-aged and younger members will ensure the committee and board have a healthy blend of stability and innovation.
The newly elected team will officially take charge after April and will lead the council until 2029. With a strong mandate from the members, the new administration is expected to focus on producers’ welfare, industry challenges, and new development plans. There is now a lot of expectation within the Tamil film industry regarding the changes and initiatives that will be introduced under G.K.M.'s leadership.
