Shoot at Site: A Vadivelu-deva number gets a modern makeover in 'Love Oh Love'

Nearly thirty years after its release, the song Vaadi Pottapulla Veliye ( Kaalam Maari Pochu ), sung by Vadivelu and composed by Deva, has been given a modern spin by the young cast and crew of the romcom Love Oh Love . When we entered the set of the film, headlined by Pavish and Naga Durga, shots for the track were being filmed.

Everyone here has warmly welcomed me to Tamil cinema: Naga DurgaTelugu actress and YouTuber Naga Durga, who is making her Tamil debut with the film, states, “Everyone here warmly welcomed me to Tamil cinema.” About her character, she says, “I can relate more with my character, Avantika. She is chill and joyful. Pavish is down-to-earth, and he understands Telugu. So, I always speak with him whenever I have any doubts. He made me very comfortable on set.” As for the song, the actress says she will “have a few dance steps”.

Director Magesh Rajendran tells us how the team has altered the song to align with the sensibilities of today’s audience. “We didn’t use the word ‘ pottapulla ’ as we feel a woman shouldn’t be addressed in such a way in today’s time. So, the opening words of the track have been changed to ‘ Vaadi Chellakutty Veliye ’,” he informs.
The song, he shares, appears at a necessary juncture in the film. “My film will give equal importance to both the hero and the heroine. Through the film, we’re addressing an emotion that hasn’t been explored in love stories,” the filmmaker remarks.

Like Arabic Kuthu, this is a western kuthu song: Apsar

Apsar, who previously choreographed for notable films like Doctor and Parking , shares, “It’s a folk song, but there’ll also be a western blend, as it’s a remix. We’ve choreographed the song in a hybrid folkcum-western manner. Like Arabic Kuthu , this one’s a western kuthu song.”

My character is a good guy who has succumbed to peer pressure: PavishPavish shares that the atmosphere at the filming location has been fun. “Right now, we’re filming a heartbreak song. It is a close-to-reality type of song.” Speaking about his role in the movie, he says, “My character in the film is extroverted and easily mingles with people. He is a good guy who has succumbed to peer pressure. We are shooting all over Chennai and I always look forward to shooting at live locations.”

We are trying to do the song differently without imitating Vadivelu sir: PG Muthiah

Acclaimed cinematographer PG Muthiah, who has worked in several popular Tamil films, including Poo , Kanden Kadhalai and Settai , states that the team wanted the song sequence to be “dreamy” and adds, “The original song was filmed more traditionally. But we’re trying to do it differently without imitating Vadivelu sir. Generally, I don’t use zoom shots. But for this song, I tried a few things, like using a gimbal with zoom. The dance and costumes will be trendy and not in ’90s style.”
