'Karuppu' has continued its successful theatrical journey since arriving in cinemas on May 15. The fantasy action drama featuring Suriya in the lead role has managed to attract strong audience interest.
Directed by RJ Balaji, apart from its commercial performance, several behind-the-scenes stories connected to the movie have also started attracting attention.
RJ Balaji opens up about industry reactions
During a recent interaction with Cinema Vikatan, RJ Balaji shared several details about the response Karuppu received after release. The actor-director said the film brought congratulatory messages from different personalities within the industry.
He revealed that Bollywood actor
Aamir Khan appreciated the film and reached out after its success.
"Following Karuppu's release, Aamir Khan sent a message to Suriya sir appreciating the film, and he later shared it with me. I also received a call from
Silambarasan TR, who conveyed his wishes. Apart from that, several leading filmmakers reached out as well."
RJ Balaji speaks about audience expectations
RJ Balaji also discussed his approach toward storytelling and audience trust.
"I conveyed the film in the way it was meant to be understood.
If that had not happened, handling the criticism that comes through social media today would have been difficult. Audiences place their trust in me, and because of that I feel responsible for being honest. We delivered a strong narrative in the first half, and that probably helped viewers stay connected and enjoy the film despite the second half having comparatively less story."
RJ Balaji also revealed an interesting detail regarding a dialogue connected to 'Mookuthi Amman'. According to him, Suriya initially felt uncomfortable delivering that portion and repeatedly expressed hesitation.
"Suriya sir was initially unwilling to say that dialogue. I kept insisting and even brought up some of my previous films while trying to convince him. But he continued saying, ‘I won’t do it… I won’t do it… I won’t do it.’"
The director also recalled another conversation that happened shortly before the film's release.
"A week before the film's release, he asked me whether we could remove that part. He told me, ‘We should not make fun of other people’s films.’ He is genuinely a very kind person. I told him, ‘Sir, I directed the film, so it’s okay.’"
RJ Balaji stated that the dialogue later generated a major response among audiences in theatres. According to him, viewers reacted positively despite earlier concerns regarding its inclusion.
'Karuppu' maintains box office stability
Meanwhile, 'Karuppu' continues its theatrical journey into the third week. The film stars Suriya and
Trisha Krishnan in lead roles. According to latest Sacnilk figures, the movie collected Rs 3.25 crore net in India on Day 15 from 3,024 shows.
