The period drama was lensed by Tirru and written by Kamal Haasan with music by Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja. While the film was surrounded by several controversies during the time of release, it wasn't a hit at the box-office. However, it won three National Awards.
Interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan had played the role of Amjad Ali Khan in the film and he did it without any money because he knew that the film's budget wasn't that much. Shah Rukh only got a wristwatch for acting in my film at the time. Though the film didn’t do too well at the box office, it had earned a cult status.
