From TV to films; D Imman recalls his long association with late singer SPB on his first death anniversary

D Imman has scored music for more than 100 films, and he is currently weaving music for Rajinikanth's 'Annaatthe'. The talented composer has a special track made for 'Annaatthe'.We call it special as D Imam had rendered one of the songs with late singer SP Balasubrahmanyam for this Rajini starrer. Today, on the death anniversary of SP Balasubrahmanyam, we contacted D Imman and the veteran singer in an exclusive chat with ETimes recalled his long association with the SPB. Excerpts from the conversation.

Imman went down the memory lane and recalled the bond he shared with SPB, Imman said, "SP Balasubrahmanyam sir never made me uncomfortable while working with him, and even after being a senior, he always behaved like a friend. I remember SP Balasubrahmanyam was shocked to see me after I lost some weight and enquired about it and also asked for some tips as he also wished to lose weight." Expressing his disappointment over not getting a chance to work with him more in films, he said, "I had worked more with SPB sir during my television days than films. Unfortunately I didn't get more chances on big screens."

It's been a year, SPB left a huge void in the music industry; however, the composer feels that he doesn't feel that the late singer had ever left the industry. "I didn't feel his absence since I hear Ilayaraja's song mostly, and it's definitely SPB sir when it's Raja sir music. So I didn't feel his absence, instead I usually think that he had gone for a show abroad. Even today, anyone can hear SPB sir's song as he has given uncountable songs across languages," he opines.

D Imman is one of the lucky few who got a word of appreciation from SP Balasubrahmanyam. Narrating the instance, Imman said, "Sir always used to tell me that my music has a nativity soul, which attracts everyone. I have also received the same appreciation from many while traveling around places."

On sharing about SPB's last song for Rajinikanth in 'Annaatthe', Imman felt, "SP Balarabrahmanyam had crooned for the 'Annaatthe' song in December 2019, and he completed the whole song in less than 40 minutes. I thought of doing the Telugu version with him, but it didn't happen, and we are yet to find singers for Telugu. The important fact about SP Balasubrahmanyam's 'Annaatthe' song is it's going to be his last song for Rajinikanth, and I am blessed to work for it."
