From Kasimedu to Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam: Dhanush’s 5 most ambitious yet dropped films

Dhanush, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated actors, is known for his fearless script choices and emotionally charged performances. From gritty dramas to commercial entertainers, he has mastered a wide range of genres. Yet, not all of his ambitious projects have made it to the silver screen. Over the years, a handful of films featuring Dhanush—often helmed by visionary directors like Selvaraghavan and Vetrimaaran were shelved midway, leaving fans disappointed and curious. Here’s a look at five such shelved films that had immense potential.

2/6

Kasimedu

This multi-starrer project was a dream collaboration in the making. Directed by Selvaraghavan, Kasimedu was set to feature Ajith Kumar, Dhanush, and Bharath in pivotal roles. The film was expected to explore a gritty, coastal narrative based on the lives of fishermen. Despite the buzz and anticipation surrounding the star cast and the director's unique vision, the project was shelved before it could go on the floors.

3/6

Doctors

Another collaboration between Dhanush and Selvaraghavan, Doctors, was announced with Sonia Agarwal as the female lead. The film was expected to delve into the medical field with Selvaraghavan’s trademark emotional complexity. However, due to undisclosed reasons, the project never progressed beyond its initial stages and was quietly dropped.

4/6

Sudhaadi

A promising venture with a powerhouse combination Dhanush, Parthiban, and director Vetrimaaran Sudhaadi generated considerable excitement. The film reportedly began shooting, with five days of footage already captured featuring Parthiban. Unfortunately, creative or production issues led to the film being dropped shortly after it began.

5/6

Thesiya Nedunchaalai

Thesiya Nedunchaalai was supposed to mark the directorial debut of Vetrimaaran with Dhanush in the lead. However, the project was dropped during its early stages. Interestingly, the core story didn’t go to waste. Vetrimaaran's assistant later revived the script as Udhayam NH4, which starred Siddharth in the lead. Meanwhile, Dhanush and Vetrimaaran eventually teamed up for their first successful outing with Polladhavan, a film that went on to become a cult classic.

6/6

Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam

This film holds a particularly curious place in Dhanush’s career. Directed by Selvaraghavan and starring Andrea Jeremiah alongside Dhanush, Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam was reportedly completed in terms of filming. Yet, in a surprising turn of events, the project was abruptly shelved during post-production, leaving fans puzzled and disappointed.
