It looks like sports personalities taking to films has become the in thing in the industry. The latest addition to the list is J Vignesh, a popular golfer from Coimbatore. Vignesh was just 6 years old when he had his first brush with the club and ball game. Golf impressed the GRG Matriculation Higher Secondary school student so much that his entire childhood revolved around it.
Today, Vignesh is a popular name in the Coimbatore golf circuit, thanks to the numerous awards in his kitty.
I have spent at least 25 years of my life in the golf circuit. As a child, I used to play at different tournaments across the country until I left to Brisbane, Australia, to pursue my 12th grade. I moved to the US later to do my graduation. But the tryst with golf continues and I play at regular intervals, says the 31-year-old Race Course resident.
The golfer is now all set to turn over a new leaf in his life as he is all set to make his acting debut in Kollywood. Despite leaving no stone unturned to bring out my best in golf, I had always wanted to give films a shot. I was assisting the producer of my latest film, C Rajkumar when I got my first film offer in the musical outing, Pesu. This was in 2013 and I was approached to play the lead role. The film is directed by debutante Ra Cyril and has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. I play a love-lorn in the film, who traverses places to meet the love of his life. The film is set in three hill stations- Ooty, Kodaikanal and Kulu-Manali. The song Vennira Iravugal, sung by Yuvan himself has already been well-received by the audience.
Opportunity came knocking once again for the golfer-turned-actor, this time in the form of a horror-thriller, Uthra. Uthra is a horror film sans any ghost. The film is directed by Naveen KBB, who had earlier directed Nellai Santhippu and had penned the story of the recent release Sagaptham. It was interesting and challenging to work in a horror film. Naveen Sir was extremely friendly and had oodles of patience. As the star cast comprises predominantly newbies, he would wait patiently until we got the expressions right.
Interestingly, Vignesh will make his film debut as Vishwa. Since there is already an actor of the same name, Naveen Sir christened me Vishwa. He found the name appealing and strong. We are on the verge of wrapping up the shoot for Uthra. Pesu will release soon after. And will Vignesh continue to play golf? I will, whenever I find time, but films will be priority hereafter, he says.
Director Naveen adds, "Uthra, a horror flick, revolves around six college students, who are on a trip to Korangani village where they come across Uthra, a ghost. The star cast includes Vishwa, Vivant, Raksha and Roshni. 90s star Kousalya is all set to make a comeback in the movie in the role off Goddess Amman. There is an interesting altercation between god and a character in the movie where they argue about how a bad person can enter a temple when alive, but a good person, who died under unnatural circumstances, cannot enter the premises, just because he or she is a ghost. We are planning to release the film in August as an Independence Day special."
