M Chandrakumar (fondly known as 'Auto' Chandran) whose novel Lockup inspired the film Visaaranai, has more good news in store for him. A Coimbatore-based filmmaker Vinoth Kamlin is now all set to make a film inspired by Veppamattra Velloliyil, another (yet-to-be-published) novel written by Chandrakumar. 'We began working on it soon after he returned from the Venice Film Festival last year.
The film is an intense story inspired from a thought in the book and is not an adaptation of it, unlike Visaaranai,' says Vinoth.
The film will mark the directorial debut of Vinoth, who has two short films and fan-made video albums to his credit. 'Chandrakumar Sir had seen my films and the post by actor Dhanush on his micro-blogging page about the Coimbatore version of Dangamaari. He liked my work and agreed to be part of the film. He is penning the screenplay and dialogues.'
Chandrakumar says, 'I began working on the novel in February last year. There was a death in the family after a month and the work came to a standstill. I resumed working on it after I returned from Venice. (Chandrakumar accompanied Vetri Maaran, Samuthirakani and Dinesh to Venice for the screening of the film) That is when Vinoth, who had come to congratulate me on
Visaaranai, read the draft of the novel and decided to make a film based on the storyline. I had not even penned the climax of the novel at that point of time. I wrote the screenplay and dialogues for the film in a week. The first draft is now with Gnani alias Thangavelan, who had inspired me to write Lockup.'
When asked about the plot of
Veppamattra Velloliyil, Chandrakumar reveals, 'The story takes place in a span of 24 hours and revolves around a woman, who has to undergo tremendous stress and emotional upheavals due to her sexual encounters.' Vinoth adds that the film will have two leads- one played by Praveen Nandagopal, who starred in the fan-made video of
Dangamaari. 'We are still in talks for the other lead. The title and the rest of the star cast will be finalised at the earliest. The film will be entirely shot in Coimbatore and the shoot is expected to begin by the end of March.'
