Ameer's bold comparison between 'Aadhi Bhagavan' vs 'Jailer' sparks debate, 'Mounam Pesiyadhe' director questions censor politics

Director Ameer Sultan has returned to the limelight as his romantic drama 'Mounam Pesiyadhe' was re-released in theatres for Valentine’s Day. The film, starring Suriya, Trisha Krishnan, Nandha, and Laila, is still remembered for its fresh take on love and relationships. Ameer, in a recent interview about the re-release, candidly discussed the continuing censorship debate that was the aftermath of the issues with 'Jana Nayagan'. His comments about the censor system and its functioning have now become a major talking point in the film industry.In an interview with Cinema Express, Ameer raised serious questions about who gets appointed as members of the censor board. He said that many of them are chosen because they are on good terms with the central government and not based on professional qualifications. According to him, there is no clear information about what eligibility is required to become a member. He pointed out that this is an honourable position, but the people who watch the films often give certificates based on their personal likes and dislikes. He explained in simple terms that one member may enjoy comedy and approve a film easily, while another who dislikes violence may oppose it.To explain why he feels politics plays a role in censorship, Ameer compared his own film 'Aadhi Bhagavan' starring Ravi Mohan with 'Jailer' starring Rajinikanth. He said 'Aadhi Bhagavan' did not have extreme violence or overtly sensual scenes, yet it was given an ‘A’ certificate. On the other hand, he pointed out that 'Jailer' had a scene where the hero attacks a villain with a hammer with visible bloodshed, but it received a ‘U/A’ certificate. Through this comparison, he said the certification process does not look consistent and that “this process is indeed filled with politics.”
