Malayalam director Vijay K Mohan of Venalmaram fame is all set to make his Tamil debut with Imai. Interestingly, he found his story from a stranger he met on a train journey. Recalling the inspiration for his story, Vijay says, “I met his guy on a train journey. He was looking sad and I began talking to him casually. As we spoke for quite some time, he told me his story.
It was quite heart-wrenching and I told him that it could be made as a film. He was OK with it and we sort of became good friends later, too. I even showed the first cut to him. Of course, I changed a few things to the original story to add certain cinematic elements. All I can say is that it is a crude love story.”
The film stars Sarish, Akshya Priya and Arun Thirumozhi Varman in the lead roles. “All of them were selected after several rounds of auditions. We shot the film in and around Chennai, Pondicherry, Pollachi, Ooty and Govindapuram, near Kerala. Music directors Mikku Kaavil and Aathif have done a great job. Mikku has composed three songs and has done the background score as well,” he adds.
