Maayabimbum Movie Review: A love story released in 2026, set in 2005, that feels like it should have come out in 2006. Maayabimbum arrives two decades late and wonders why nobody's home.

Set in Cuddalore and Chidambaram, Jeeva (Akash Nagarajan) is a medical student who shares an auto with Sumathi (Janaki Srinivasan) one hurried morning. She shows interest first. He follows up, literally, on his bike, and promptly crashes while tailing her. She volunteers to nurse him back to health. Thus begins the will-they-won't-they. We know early on that Jeeva ends up in prison, so the romance is doomed. The question becomes how it all falls apart.

Plenty of films mine nostalgia effectively. The problem with this period setting is that Jeeva's three college buddies spend most of their screen time huddled together discussing women: how to read their signals, how to "correct" them, how to make the right move. They sound like boys workshopping a seduction manual by committee, trading the same observations in slightly different configurations. It’s a chorus of provincial wisdom that stopped being charming about fifteen minutes in. The film keeps returning to them as if they're offering something new. They're not.

There's also a lot of mundane home life: Jeeva eating dosa, his mom making idli, the landline ringing, his family puttering around their lower-middle-class house. Once, this would have established texture. The film shows it four or five times, apparently convinced we needed reminding.

When the plot finally pivots, Sumathi recoils at Jeeva's physical advance despite having shown consistent interest throughout. She consented to go to the room with him. She initiated most of their earlier intimacy. The sudden 180 is meant to register as tragedy, but it reads more like a screenplay forcing its hand. The lengthy second half attempts to explain her perspective through diary entries, but mostly rehashes scenes we've already understood, just from a different angle.

Some laughs do land, particularly from Rajesh Bala as the group's designated punching bag. The movie could resonate with a niche audience from a particular time and place. The lead pair share decent chemistry, and there's a sincerity to how the film approaches its emotional beats. Akash and Janaki commit to the material even when it doesn't quite hold together. But what Maayabimbum desperately required was either a time machine or a rewrite.
