Director Shyamaprasad’s next, Arike, stars actor Dileep in the lead role. The director, however, seems to be battling with a preconceived notion that the audience tends to have when you mention that the film stars Dileep. “Arike is a light and breezy film with a lot of humour. But you can’t call it a comedy just because Dileep’s in it. It’s still my film,” says the ace director, adding that this film too will feature his style of filmmaking.
While Shyamaprasad’s Agnisakshi, Ore Kadal and Elektra were critically acclaimed films, the director hopes to bring in a new theme through Arike, so much so that he feels it will appeal to a larger audience. However, he shoots down talk of this being a commercial venture. “I have never believed in such distinctions of genre. Every director uses his skill to express himself,” he says, adding, “My films reach out to a niche audience. Ultimately, you could only judge the true success of a film 50 years down the line… when people still remember it.”
