Sonam Bajwa appeals to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann for compassionate action amid stray dog drive; 'Compassion matters too'
Punjabi actor Sonam Bajwa has spoken out against the ongoing stray dog drive in Punjab, urging the state government to adopt a more humane and compassionate approach while addressing public safety concerns. The actor, known for films like ‘Carry On Jatta 2’, ‘Ardab Mutiyaran’ and ‘Godday Godday Chaa’, shared her thoughts through Instagram after the state intensified action following directions linked to Supreme Court guidelines. As discussions around the stray dog issue gained momentum, Sonam clarified that the Supreme Court had not directed authorities to eliminate stray animals from the streets. In her statement, she stressed that the focus should instead remain on regulated measures such as sterilisation, vaccination and rehabilitation.“The Court spoke about regulated removal from sensitive public spaces along with sterilisation, vaccination and sheltering, not wiping dogs off the streets,” she wrote. Her remarks quickly drew attention online, with many social media users echoing concerns about how the drive was being implemented. The actor also questioned whether adequate systems and facilities were in place before such a large-scale drive was initiated.
Pointing towards the lack of proper shelters and resources, she asked, “Where are the shelters? Where is the infrastructure?” Sonam further emphasised that while human safety is important, the solution should not come at the cost of cruelty towards animals.“This absolutely cannot become a death sentence for voiceless animals. Public safety matters. Human lives matter. But compassion and responsibility matter too,” she added.

Sonam Bajwa's appeal for a more humane solution

In her message directed at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Sonam urged the government to reconsider its strategy and focus on a balanced, compassionate response to the issue. The actor suggested that authorities should work alongside animal welfare organisations, veterinarians, civic bodies and safety experts to create long-term solutions that are both practical and humane. According to her, collaboration between different stakeholders is necessary to ensure the issue is handled sensitively without harming innocent animals.Ending her note on an emotional appeal, Sonam highlighted the importance of empathy in dealing with voiceless creatures. “How we treat the voiceless ultimately reflects who we are as a society,” she stated. Her comments have since sparked widespread debate online, with reactions divided between those supporting stricter measures for public safety and others advocating for animal welfare and compassionate rehabilitation policies.
