Punjabi Cinema 2018: The newbies

The year 2018 is loaded with so many movies that it certainly will book a page in the history of Punjabi cinema. Besides bringing fresh concepts on the 70mm, this year Punjabi cinema has been welcoming a lot of newcomers. It’s not just the new actors or actresses making way into the field, but also some old players who tried stepping into different shoes. Read on to know more:

Jordan Sandhu as lead actor

After doing a small yet pivotal role in the multi-starrer ‘Subedar Joginder Singh’, Jordan Sandhu will be making debut as a main protagonist in the upcoming movie ‘Hanji Hanji’. It will be a romantic comedy directed by Rakesh Dhawa. The movie will feature Jordan Sandhu sharing the screen space with the ‘Channa Mereya’ fame Payal Rajput. The movie’s release date is still under wraps, but the film will go on the floor by the mid of August.

Anchal Singh as an actress

Anchal Singh is another famous small screen face making her way to Punjabi cinema. She will be soon seen in the movie ‘Punj Khaab’ featuring Ricky Khattar and Monica Gill. The release date of the women-oriented film is yet to be announced.

Anchal has done over 350 commercials and in a couple of them, she has also shared the screen space with the Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor. Moreover, she credits Ranbir for motivating her to pursue her dream for acting. She also did a Sri Lankan movie titled, ‘Sri Siddhartha Gautama’ where she was appreciated for her work.

Sapna Pabbi as lead actress

Generally, we see Punjabi actors boarding the bus to B-town, but with Sapna Pabbi’s debut in Pollywood, things will take a 360-degree turn. The ‘Khamoshiyaan’ fame Sapna is ready to hook the Punjabi audience soon with the release of ‘Mar Gaye Oye Loko’. Written and produced by Gippy Grewal, the movie is an out and comedy releasing on August 31. The film will feature Sapna opposite Gippy Grewal and the audience can’t wait to see this new pair.

Harish Arora as director

Harish Arora is a famous director in Haryanvi film industry and ‘Jai Hind’ will be his directorial debut in Pollywood. The movie will have Jaspinder Cheema, Gurjit Singh and Nav Bajwa in the lead roles. Harish’s debut directorial is said to be a movie based on military life. Reportedly, Jaspinder Cheema will be playing the role of a female boxer in the movie.

Sanjeeda Ali Shaikh as lead actress

After Sargun Mehta and Aditi Sharma, another popular television face, Sanjeeda Ali Shaikh joined the P-town. These three aforementioned divas share one more thing in common besides the television background. Just like Sargun and Aditi, Sanjeeda made her Punjabi debut opposite Amrinder Gill. She entered Pollywood with ‘Ashke’, that released last week on July 27. Watching a beauty like her in a Punjabi movie is a delight.

Nav Bajwa as director

The handsome hunk of the Punjabi cinema, Nav Bajwa has been entertaining the audience with his dance and acting skills since 2007. However, after a good leap of approximately 11 years, the audience saw him in a new avatar wherein he wore the cap of a director for the movie ‘Raduaa’. The directorial debut of Nav is Punjabi film industry’s first sci-fi movie that has been recently released. The movie is based on an experiment gone wrong, which makes the lead actors enjoy a hysterical experience of time travel.

Pankaj Tripathi as a Pollywood star

In the world of entertainment, Pankaj Tripathi is one of the most reputed names. Now blame it on his theatre roots or sheer talent, Pankaj has essayed every role with great finesse. After making it big in Hindi movies and exploring the land of Telugu cinema, now the artist is making his debut in Pollywood. He will be soon seen in the Punjabi biopic ‘Harjeeta’. Scheduled to release on May 18, 2018, the movie has Ammy Virk in the lead and Pankaj Tripathi will be seen playing his reel life hockey coach.

Rana Ranbir as director

Besides Nav Bajwa, another Punjabi entertainer to debut as a director is Rana Ranbir. After giving numerous hits as a writer and actor, Rana Ranbir is currently busy in his first directorial project ‘Asees’. The movie is said to have a very simple script that will strike a chord with the common men. Slated to release on June 22, 2018, the movie will have Rana Ranbir, Rupinder Rupi, Kuljinder Sidhu and Sardar Sohi in lead.

Kulwinder Billa as an actor

Before 2018, Kulwinder Billa was famous only as a singer, but with the release of ‘Subedar Joginder Singh’, the artist stepped in as an actor in the field of Punjabi cinema. Portraying a key role in the biopic based on the life story of the Param Vir Chakra recipient Subedar Joginder Singh Sahnan, Kulwinder proved his mettle in the industry. In one of the interviews, the director of the movie Simerjit Singh was quoted saying that the artist has a great future as an actor ahead.

Sawan Rupowali as lead actress

Another talent making way into the amazing world of Punjabi entertainment is Sawan Rupowali. Though in a very short role, the beauty was seen in ‘Saab Bahadar’ that released in 2017. Her full-fledged entry as an actress will be made via ‘Harjeeta’. In the biopic based on the life of Indian hockey player Harjeet Singh Tuli, the movie will have Sawan in the lead opposite Ammy Virk.

Sunanda Sharma as lead actress

Known for songs like ‘Jaani Tera Naa’, ‘Patake’ and ‘Billi Akh’, singer Sunanda Sharma made her cinematic debut this year. With the release of ‘Sajjan Singh Rangroot’ the artist made the world see her as a Pollywood actress. Starring opposite Diljit Dosanjh, Sunanda chose a de-glam role and a serious movie for her debut, which somewhere around the corner shows her dedication as a performer.
