When Bollywood actresses turned Marathi mulgis

Kareena Kapoor Khan

We recently saw Saif Ali Khan’s begum portraying a Maharashtrian mulgi with aplomb in Rohit Shetty’s 'Singham Returns'. In the film, Kareena not only mouthed quite a few dialogues in chaste Marathi but also used a few cuss words which are typical in the dialect. To perfect her character, the actress learnt speaking in Marathi and also took lessons in the conventional Maharashtrian way of grinding spices which was required for a particular scene in the film.

Katrina Kaif

Her first ever item number in a movie, 'Chikni Chameli' from the Hrithik Roshan starrer 'Agneepath', saw Katrina perform lavani steps. The actress looked pretty in the song wearing a contemporarily styled koli attire. She also had compliments coming her way for her dancing skills after the song released.

Priyanka Chopra

We have seen Priyanka essay a Marathi mulgi twice. First was when she played Shahid Kapoor’s love interest in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 'Kaminey' and later in Karan Johar’s 'Agneepath'. We must say that the actress carries off the Marathi mulgi look like none other.

Vidya Balan

Vidya looked every bit a Maharashtrian wearing a red nauvari sari, nath and gajra when she grooved to the 'Mala Jau De' lavani track in the Sharman Joshi starrer 'Ferrari Ki Sawaari'. The actress has expressed her love for the Marathi language and her desire to work in Marathi films in one of her interviews.

Genelia D’Souza Deshmukh

Genelia pleasantly surprised her fans with her guest appearance in the special holi song 'Aala Holicha San' in her hubby Riteish Deshmukh’s latest Marathi release 'Lai Bhaari'. The actress who has formed an ever lasting bond with Marathi, thanks to her Maharashtrian husband, looked beautiful in the song in a typical Maharashtrian bindi and nose ring.

Shraddha Kapoor

Being born to a Maharashtrian mother and being actor Padmini Kolhapure’s niece, Shraddha’s Maharashtrian roots are known to the industry. The actress was seen flawlessly essaying a Marathi mulgi in her hit film 'Aashiqui 2' and has been open about the fact that she has had a Maharashtrian upbringing.

We saw Asin’s Marathi mulgi avatar in the Akshay Kumar starrer 'Khiladi 786'. Asin who has absolutely no connect with the vernacular, went out of her way to perfect the look for her character. She was so excited to play a boisterous Maharashtrian girl that she decided to personally select a few nauvari saris for the role and spent a lot of time perfecting her Marathi dialogues.

Rani Mukerji

Almost everyone remembers Rani Mukerji’s Marathi character in Sachin Kundalkar’s 2011 release 'Aiyyaa'. Rani did complete justice to her role in the movie as a girl who lives in her dream world. It was a delight watching the actress donning a traditional Maharashtrian avatar.

The 2002 item song 'Ishq Kamina' from the movie 'Shakti' was featured on actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. It saw the green eyed actress sporting a Marathi look which was complete with a chandrakor bindi and diamond studded nose ring.
