She is known to portray some of the most sensitive roles on celluloid with effortless ease. But actress
Veena Jamkar recently admitted, 'Playing a lesbian onscreen was my toughest role till date.'
Veena, who is playing a homosexual in
Ravi Jadhav's Mitraa, one of the short stories in the upcoming film Bioscope, said, 'Although the sexuality of the lesbian character is not expressed in an overt manner in the film, in certain scenes I have to express my love for my co-star
Mrunmayee Deshpande.
The film is based on
Vijay Tendulkar's short story with a poem by Sandeep Khare in its backdrop. While Mrunmayee is very cute, I still found it very difficult to feel
attracted towards her. Had it been a handsome man in her place, things would have been different.'
Speaking about how she prepared for this role, she said, 'While I have some gay friends, I am yet to come across a girl who openly admits being a lesbian. So, I studied a lot of photographs of lesbians to try and get the nuances right. Also I feel that a homosexual's struggle is more internal than external and hence you can't adopt clich'd mannerisms to portray it.'
