The diktat further elaborates on giving Marathi films their due failing which the defaulters will face the punishment of losing their license.
The decision has evoked mixed reactions from the Marathi and Hindi film industry. Mahesh Bhatt and Deepti Naval criticised the decision and actor Riteish Deshmukh, who has acted in Hindi as well as Marathi films, tweeted, "Keep Bollywood out of politics." He also said that "it is not a fight between Hindi and Marathi cinema and that we live in one country". Marathi filmmaker Ravi Jadhav on the other hand, welcomed the decision calling it a "great news for Marathi cinema". Bollywood director Hansal Mehta too opposed the directive saying,"I feel nothing should be enforced. Films should be shown on basis of quality, film transcends regional barriers."
Twitter exploded with reactions from all parts condemning the decision calling it autrocratic. One person tweeted, "Instead of granting subsidies, the government should support filmmakers." As we await more reports, here is something worth mentioning.
Prior to this, in the year 2010 the then Maharashtra Home Minister Late RR Patil has ordered a similar rule wherein all multiplexes in Mumbai were to screen Marathi films in prime-time slots.
