The untold story behind ‘Rajavinte Makan’: Mohanlal’s meteoric rise to Malayalam cinema stardom on Rs 40 lakh budget

While many actors struggle to sustain themselves even for a few years, Mohanlal and Mammootty have dominated Malayalam cinema for over four decades. Both made their debuts in 1980 and have since appeared in hundreds of films across multiple languages, winning numerous National and Kerala State Film Awards. Mohanlal reached superstardom in 1986, with Mammootty joining the pinnacle a year later, and even after 40 years, neither shows signs of slowing down.

The Dennis Joseph connection

Interestingly, both actors achieved massive success through scripts penned by the legendary screenwriter Dennis Joseph, widely regarded as one of Malayalam cinema’s finest commercial storytellers. Dennis first worked with Mammootty on his debut project, ‘Eeran Sandhya’, and went on to write hits like ‘Nirakkoottu’, ‘Sayam Sandhya’, ‘Shyama’, ‘Nyayavidhi’, and ‘Pranamam’. However, when Dennis teamed up with director Thambi Kannanthanam for a new venture, Mammootty opted out, despite their strong rapport.


During an episode of Safari’s talk show Charithram Enniloode, Dennis revealed that director Joshiy suggested he write for Thambi. “After the failure of ‘Aa Neram Alppa Dooram’ (1985), Thambi couldn’t find a producer willing to work with him. So he decided to produce the film himself,” Dennis said. The writer pitched a gangster film centred on an antihero, and Thambi immediately liked the idea. Dennis even suggested Mammootty for the lead role, but the actor declined due to his previous setback, reportedly making remarks that disappointed the director.

Mohanlal steps in for ‘Rajavinte Makan’

Thambi, undeterred, approached Mohanlal, who agreed to take on the project without even hearing the full story or having worked with Dennis Joseph before. The script was completed in just five to six days. To fund the film, Thambi sold his car and pawned some ancestral properties. Mohanlal played Vincent Gomes, the antihero crime boss, while Ratheesh portrayed the second antagonist, Home Minister CK Krishnadas. The female lead, Advocate Ancy, required a strong performer, and Thambi chose Ambika, with whom he shared a good rapport.

At the time, Ambika was a far bigger star than Mohanlal, having acted alongside Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in Tamil cinema, and enjoyed demand across Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu industries. Her mother initially requested Rs 1.25 lakh as her fee, according to Manorama, but Ambika later agreed to Rs 1 lakh, matching Mohanlal’s remuneration. The film was shot in just 32 days on a tight budget of Rs 40 lakh.

A blockbuster that changed Malayalam cinema

Despite scepticism about Thambi’s credibility and doubts about Mohanlal in a crime boss avatar, ‘Rajavinte Makan’ opened to rave reviews from its very first show. The film reportedly collected Rs 80–85 lakh, nearly doubling its budget.
