Paravoor Bharathan: Lesser known facts

Paravoor Bharathan passes away

According to an IANS report, character actor of Malayalam film industry, Paravoor Bharathan breathed his last on August 19 morning at his home in Kerala. He was 86 and was suffering from illness since 2009. Bharathan is survived by his wife Thankamani (who was an actress too) and his children – three sons and one daughter.

Paravoor Bharathan's childhood passion

Paravoor Bharathan was born in Vaavakaadu in Paravoor area of Cochin. He had a passion for acting from his childhood. He used to participate in several stage shows in his schools. Bharathan reportedly had to discontinue his studies due to his father's death. So eventually, he followed his passion and chose acting as his career. There was no turning back thereafter.

Paravoor Bharathan's kickstart in acting career

Bharathan was very active in theatre before he forayed into films. According to a report on TheHindu.com, Bharathan used to often participate in plays staged in his school. The noted Kathaprasangam artist, Kedamangalam Sadanandan, was part of the audience for one of his plays. He selected Bharathan for an amateur theatre group 'Pushpita'. This was a kickstart for his career and then Bharathan, with this troupe, performed in and around his hometown Paravoor.

Paravoor Bharathan forays into films

Due to his immense talent and good experience in theatre, he got to work in films as well. Thanks to his good contacts with the theatre artists, he landed a role in the movie of the play he was part of, Rakthabandham. This 1951 released film was directed by Vel Swamy. His movie career started off in the year 1951. Till 2009, he acted in more than 200 films.

In his film career spanning 58 years, he got to play diverse characters from that of a villain, comedian to even serious roles. Some of his iconic and memorable roles are in films like Kerala Kesari (1951), Godfather (1991), Aniyathipraavu (1997), Meleparambil Aanveedu (1993), In Harihar Nagar (1990) and many more. His last released film was Changathikoottam that released in the year 1990.
