Vinayan moves Kerala High Court, alleges B Unnikrishnan is part of Mollywood 'Power Group'
Malayalam film director Vinayan has filed a petition in the Kerala High Court, challenging the inclusion of director B Unnikrishnan in an advisory panel formed by the Kerala government in 2023. For the unversed, the panel is tasked with suggesting reforms for the Malayalam film industry, based on the findings of the Justice K Hema Committee report, which examined the working conditions of women in Mollywood.
According to the Bar and Bench website, in his petition, Vinayan contends that Unnikrishnan's presence on the committee compromises its neutrality, given his alleged involvement in unethical practices. Vinayan claims that Unnikrishnan is part of a "power group" in the Malayalam film industry, as referenced in the Justice Hema Committee report. He asserts that Unnikrishnan's influence would perpetuate issues such as exploitation, male dominance, and discrimination against women, which the committee is meant to address.
Meanwhile, Vinayan's plea highlights Unnikrishnan’s controversial history, particularly his role as the secretary of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA). Vinayan alleges that Unnikrishnan was involved in an unofficial ban imposed on him within the industry. This ban was later challenged by Vinayan before the Competition Commission of India (CCI), leading to a ruling against FEFKA office-bearers, including Unnikrishnan. The CCI found them guilty of anti-competitive practices, and a penalty was imposed. Vinayan recalls that the Supreme Court upheld this decision, reinforcing his concerns about Unnikrishnan's influence.
Vinayan argues that an individual alleged for unethical behavior should not hold a position of power on a committee responsible for industry reforms. He warns that B Unnikrishnan’s inclusion would hinder the committee’s ability to bring meaningful change to the Malayalam film industry.
Vinayan further reveals that he had previously raised his concerns in letters addressed to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Minister for Cultural Affairs. However, after receiving no response, he decided to approach the High Court for relief.
The petition, filed through advocates KR Prathish, PK Sreevalsakrishnan, S Unnikrishnan (Nellad), Akhil Babu, and Krishna Das, requests the court to quash the government’s 2023 notification, specifically regarding the inclusion of Unnikrishnan in the advisory panel. Vinayan contends that the presence of someone like Unnikrishnan on the committee would undermine efforts to improve standards in the Malayalam film industry and address the issues highlighted in the Justice Hema Committee report.
