‘Pathonpatham Noottandu’ to ‘Paappan’: Best comeback movies by famous directors

There is a common trend seen in cinema that a director or even a script writer’s talent begins to drop after achieving a certain peak level in his or her career. On the contrary, there are several others who try to learn from their mistakes and make their grand comeback. Coming to the Malayalam film industry, there are several directors who have faced similar issues in their film careers. As Bollywood has made its grand comeback with ‘Brahmastra’, let's take a look at the best comeback movies by veteran directors in Mollywood.

‘Oppam’

Mollywood director Priyadarshan who has made several humongous hit movies in Malayalam faced the lowest point in his career as the majority of his Malayalam and Bollywood remake movies turned out to be failures. The veteran director made his perfect comeback with the Mohanlal starrer thriller movie ‘Oppam’ and the audience hailed the movie for its thrilling execution style and stunning performance of Mohanlal as the blind man character named Jayaraman. The film was scripted by Priyadarshan and Govind Vijayan.

‘Kaduva’

‘Kaduva’ is the most recent example of a massive comeback of a veteran director and this Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer arrived at the theatres at the right time as the majority of the audience were literally tired of watching realistic drama movies and were waiting for a high voltage action entertainer. Shaji Kailas added the perfect essence of his unique 90s-style action and presentation style. ‘Kaduva’ was hailed by the audience as the comeback movie of Shaji Kailas.

‘Pathonpatham Noottandu’

Mollywood director Vinayan is best known for trying experimental projects that come on par with any Hollywood movies. His films ‘Athisayan’, and ‘Albhuthadweep’ can be termed as the best high-budget experimental projects ever made in Mollywood. Everything being said, Vinayan faced the lowest point in his career for several years as the majority of the movies were underwhelming and the technical quality of those films was also not impressive. Now the director has made his perfect comeback with Siju Wilson starrer ‘Pathonpatham Noottandu’ and the film scores high in every department ranging from technical to execution.

‘Paappan’

The recently released investigation thriller ‘Paappan’ marked the comeback of two legends, Suresh Gopi and the director Joshiy. It has been over 20 years since the hit-making combo made a movie together and with ‘Paappan’, Joshiy and Suresh Gopi gave an intense thrilling experience for the audience coupled with terrific performances. The film reportedly minted over Rs 30 crores at the Kerala box office.

‘Drishyam 2’

Even though the director Jeethu Joseph is best known for delivering several successful movies, after ‘Drishyam’, the director failed to impress the audience. Jeethu Joseph’s films ‘Oozham’, ‘Mr. and Mrs Rowdy’ and ‘Aadhi’ terribly failed at the box office and for the same reason the expectation levels for the sequel of ‘Drishyam’ was really low among the audience. Surprisingly Jeethu Joseph proved that he is the best filmmaker in the Malayalam industry with the humongous success of ‘Drishyam 2’. Later the suspense thriller movie ‘12th Man’ also earned many positive responses from movie buffs.
