Mammootty’s ‘Big B’: Reasons why we love this Amal Neerad’s cult action film

Finally the most anticipated Amal Neerad-Mammootty film ‘Bheeshma Parvam’ has hit the screens. Although the film is garnering much attention and praise from cinephiles and fans, most of their discussions round up to the 2007 film ‘Big B’. Most fans seem to weigh ‘Bheeshma Parvam’ with ‘Big B’ and are contemplating on the subject regarding which one is superior. This shows how much the audience remembers or loves the directorial debut film of Amal Neerad even after a long span of 15 years. Here let's take a look at why the film ‘Big B’ stands high as one of the best groundbreaking cult classic Malayalam movies of all time.

Never seen before making style

During the year 2007, when Malayalam cinema was taking its baby steps to newer formats of storytelling, it was this film ‘Big B’ that literally acted as a guidebook on how to tell a normal revenge story in a different style. Most of the Malayali audience was stunned at the output created by Amal Neerad that comes on par with any Hollywood action film.

Bilal John Kurishingal

The legendary actor Mammootty has played umpteen roles which are unique and the actor has flawlessly breathed life into each character without losing the emotional core. Mammootty’s portrayal of the gangster character Bilal John Kurishingal was so perfect that the character has a huge fan base still now. With the right potion of humor and seriousness, Mammootty used a different style of delivering dialogues in the film and most of them stand iconic in the Malayalam cinema history.

Sayippu Tony

‘Big B’ has some of the most memorable characters in it which has a strong characterization in them. The antagonist character Sayippu Tony has a sense of a unique approach to him coupled with his terrifying looks. With that long auburn hair, grey eyes, and a husky voice, Sayippu Tony could send chills down your spines and will surely stand high as one of the memorable villains in Mollywood.

A different take on usual Mollywood action genre films

The majority of the Mollywood films that come under the label of action genres, had a plastic sense of treatment to it which the audience has already seen umpteen times. With the arrival of ‘Big B’, it could be said that the film has indeed set a benchmark for the action films that came later on. With the frequent use of slow-motion coupled with trance electronic music during action sequences, the film closely resembled a Hollywood action film. Kudos to Amal Neerad for crafting such a marvelous piece of work within budget constraints.
