IFFK 2023: ‘Thadavu’ triumphs alongside Japanese film 'Evil Does Not Exist'

The curtains fell on the 28th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in Thiruvananthapuram, marking a celebration of cinematic brilliance and global storytelling.

Amidst a gathering of cinephiles and celebs,, the festival bestowed accolades upon outstanding films and artists, graced by the presence of esteemed actor Prakash Raj as the chief guest.


Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Japanese creation, 'Evil Does Not Exist,' claimed the prestigious Suvarna Chakoram for Best Film, captivating audiences with its compelling narrative.

Meanwhile, the spotlight shone brightly on Malayalam cinema as Fazil Razak, director of the compelling 'Thadavu,' clinched the Rajata Chakoram for Best Debut Director, alongside the film's triumph in securing the coveted Audience Poll Award.

Further embellishing the roster of winners, Shokir Kholikov’s Uzbek marvel 'Sunday' secured the Rajata Chakoram for Best Director, while 'Kherwal' by Uttam Kamati earned the FFSI KR Mohanan Award for Best Debut Director from India. Anand Ekarshi’s 'Aattam' and 'B 32 Muthal 44 Vare' by Shruthi Sharanyam both garnered recognition, the former securing the NETPAC Award for the Best Malayalam Film and the latter clinching the FIPRESCI Award for the Best Malayalam Film by a Debut Director.

During the event, Prakash Raj’s return to Kerala was met with warmth as he lauded the state for hosting a festival untouched by divisive ideologies. His impassioned speech addressed pressing societal issues, emphasizing the need for dialogue and understanding amidst narrative disparities.

The ceremony wasn’t without its share of controversies, as Kerala State Chalachithra Academy chairman Ranjith faced disapproval from the audience. Nevertheless, the festival celebrated the richness of cinema, honoring ace Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Zanussi with the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the legendary Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and graced by the presence of Cuban Ambassador to India, Alejandro Simancas.
