Happy Raksha Bandhan: Popular siblings in M-Town

The bond between siblings is always special. Be it between a brother-sister, or brothers or sisters, the relationship is divine and priceless. Indians celebrate Raksha Bandhan every year to honour the bond between brother and sister. The Hindu festival where sisters tie Rakhi on their brother’s wrist and pray for their wellbeing and safety, falls on August 22 this year.

On this occasion, let’s take a glimpse at some of the most popular siblings in Malayalam cinema.

Prithviraj Sukumaran and Indrajith Sukumaran are the most popular siblings in M-Town. As their father late Sukumaran was a popular star in Malayalam cinema, Prithviraj and Indrajith are no strangers to showbiz. Indrajith Sukumaran, who is elder, ventured into the movies first and Prithviraj followed him later.

Kalaranjini, Kalpana, and Urvashi too come from a background of artists. Their parents were theatre artists and so stepping into showbiz was expected out of them. The elder Kalaranjini ventured into movies in 1987 with ‘Madanolsavam’. Two years later Kalpana debuted in movies and in 1979, the youngest Urvashi made her debut. Kalaranjini and Urvashi are active in the industry and unfortunately their sister Kalpana passed away in 2016.

‘A family of artists’ would be the fitting description for the Sivan family. Late Sivan was an award-winning photographer and cinematographer and his children, Santosh, Sangeeth, and Sanjeev followed his path. Santosh Sivan hardly needs an introduction. He is one of the most talented artists the country has ever produced. The cinematographer-actor-filmmaker has put Indian cinema on the global map and his brothers Sanjeev and Sangeeth are no different. All of them are filmmakers.

Manju Warrier and Madhu Warrier are siblings. The duo comes from a regular household in Nagercoil. Manju Warrier started taking dance classes from a very young age. She was into arts and was a Kalathilakam. She ventured into the movies at the age of 17 and gradually rose to stardom. Her brother Madhu followed her footsteps later.

Cinema runs in the genes of Vineeth and Dhyan. The duo’s dad Sreenivasan is a prominent Malayalam actor-filmmaker-screenwriter. Vineeth was more interested in music than acting, so he entered showbiz as a singer with the 2002 film ‘Kilichundan Mampazham’. Later in 2008, he made his debut as an actor and two years later stepped into filmmaking. A couple of years later Vineeth’s younger brother too stepped into movies and he is an actor-producer now.
