​Happy Birthday Shwetha Menon: Lesser known facts about the diva

A model, actor, dancer, wife, mom - Shwetha Menon has different roles to fulfill in life. Born to Malayali parents in Chandigarh, Shwetha Menon was exposed to a range of cultures and lifestyles from a very young age. And that has perhaps fuelled her journey from Mollywood to beauty contests and later to Bollywood. The gorgeous and talented diva is turning a year older today, and on this special day let’s take a look at some of the lesser-known facts about Shwetha Menon.

​She has an eventful modeling career

After making her debut in movies through the Malayalam film ‘Anaswaram’, Shwetha Menon shifted her focus to modeling. She has taken part in a few beauty pageant competitions including the Miss India contest of 1994. She was the third runner-up of the pageant, wherein Sushmita Sen was crowned as Miss India and Aishwarya Rai, the first runner up. She has also won the first Gladrags female supermodel in 1994 and was a semi-finalist at Miss Asia Pacific. Shwetha Menon also won the Femina Miss India Asia Pacific, the same year.

​She has worked in Bollywood films

After being part of several beauty pageants and winning some, Shwetha Menon was flooded with offers from Bollywood. She made her debut in Bollywood with the 1997 film ‘Prithvi’. She signed many Hindi films following that. And as of now, Shwetha Menon has appeared in around 30 Bollywood films.

​She has won the Best Actress award twice

Shwetha Menon has also been part of some of the exceptional Malayalam films. She has a distinct style when it comes to acting and has given life to many characters on screen. Shwetha Menon has also won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress, two times. She won the Kerala State Film Award for the first time in 2009 for her performance in ‘Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha’. She played Cheeru, a character, which has negative shades. After two years, she won the best actress award for her role in Aashiq Abu’s film ‘Salt N' Pepper’.

​The controversial shoot for ‘Kalimannu’

Shwetha Menon has always said ‘Yes’ to roles that she feels are exciting. And when director Blessy approached her with the script of ‘Kalimannu’, Shwetha Menon couldn’t deny it. The film was about a woman, who takes the decision of getting artificially inseminated from her dead husband’s sample. Shwetha Menon was truly pregnant with her first baby and the film captured the stages of her pregnancy in it. The movie made headlines and brewed controversies, as it captured the childbirth of the actress. It was the first time in the history of Indian cinema, and the actress and the makers had to go through a lot.

​Never shies away from bold roles

Shwetha Menon believes in being part of films that convince the actor in her. And ‘Kalimannu’ itself is a good example of that. Shwetha Menon has never shied away from being bold on-screen or acting in intimate scenes. And that has perhaps given her the opportunity to become part of some exceptional films like ‘Rathinirvedham’. Shwetha Menon has always tried to be truthful to the characters she plays and has given her best for its completion.
