Bollywood remakes of Malayalam movies starring Akshay Kumar

Recently the Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar officially announced via his social media handles that the Hindi remake of the superhit Malayalam film, ‘Driving License’ is all set to start rolling soon. The film is titled ‘Selfiee’ and will have Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in the lead while the film will be directed by Raj Mehta. Let us tell you, this is not the first time that Akki will be working on a remake of a Malayalam movie. It seems he has a special fondness for Mollywood as he has done several movies that were originally remakes of Malayalam movies. Interestingly, most of the films were done by teaming up with the director Priyadarshan. Here let’s take a look at the Bollywood remakes of Malayalam movies starring the legendary actor Akshay Kumar.

Garam Masala- Boeing Boeing

The Bollywood movie ‘Garam Masala’, released in 2005, was directed by the renowned director Priyadarshan and it was an official remake of his own superhit movie ‘Boeing Boeing’ starring actor Mohanlal and Mukesh in the lead which was released in the year 1985. In the Bollywood movie ‘Garam Masala’, the actors Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Paresh Rawal, Rimi Sen essayed major roles and the script was penned down by Priyadarshan himself and the dialogues by Neeraj Vora and Jay Master. The film ‘Garam Masala’ was a humongous Box office hit during that time.

Boss- Pokkiri Raja

Akshay Kumar’s film ‘Boss’ was released in the year 2013 and was an official remake of the Mammootty starrer film ‘Pokkiri Raja’. The film ‘Boss’ was directed by Anthony D’ Souza. Although the film was an official remake of ‘Pokkiri Raja’, most of the scenes in ‘Boss’ were executed in a different style. Apart from the stylish appearance of Akshay Kumar and the beautiful songs, the film ‘Boss’ got mixed responses from the audience and was only an average hit at the Box office.

Khatta Meetta- Vellanakalude Naadu

The film ‘Vellanakalude Naadu’ had actors Mohanlal and Shobana playing the major lead roles and the film was directed by Priyadarshan. ‘Vellanakalude Naadu’ was released in the year 1988 and received much adulation from the audience. Priyadarshan took to remake the film in Bollywood with Akshay Kumar in the lead and the remake was titled ‘Khatta Meetta’ released in the year 2010. When the same storyline of ‘Vellanakalude Naadu’ was rehashed in ‘Khatta Meetta’, the audience felt it was an outdated concept and Priyadarshan couldn’t bring the magic onto the screens with ‘Khatta Meetta’. The film got many mixed responses from the audience.

Bhool Bhulayya- Manichitrathazhu

The film ‘Bhool Bhulayya’ was an official remake of the superhit film ‘Manichitrathazhu’ and actor Akshay Kumar reprised the role of Dr. Sunny which was originally essayed by the actor Mohanlal. The film ‘Bhool Bhulayya’ was directed by Priyadarshan and the songs in the movie were trending during the time of its release. ‘Bhool Bhulayya’ had a battalion of actors including Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Rajpal Yadav, Ameesha Patel, and many more.

Hera Pheri- Ramji Rao Speaking

The superhit Malayalam comedy film ‘Ramji Rao Speaking’, which was released in the year 1989 was also remade in Bollywood. The Bollywood remake was directed by Priyadarshan and the name of the film was ‘Hera Pheri’. Akshay Kumar reprised the role of Gopalakrishnan in the movie ‘Hera Pheri’ which was originally played by the Malayalam actor Mukesh. The film ‘Hera Pheri’ was a huge success at the Box office.
