From the massy 'Roberrt' to the mellifluous 'Ninna Sanihake', 2021 was a refreshing, musical year to say the least

Roberrt - Arjun Janya

Tharun K. Sudhir's 'Roberrt' can be declared the year's first major success and a lot of it can be attributed to Arjun Janya's work as the composer. Granted that the mass entertainer also boasted of high production standards, a reliable storyline, and credible performances by the cast, but the immediate success of the songs also helped the film gain a lot of positive response ahead of the release. From Kannu Hodiyaka to Baby Dance Floor Ready, the music album of 'Roberrt' comprises many chartbusters.

Yuvarathnaa - Thaman S.

'Yuvarathnaa' may have been an ill-fated film with respect to its theatrical release but the lead-up to it, as many would fondly recall, was brimming with excitement and fun, and it all, perhaps, comes down to the songs that came out in the course. S. Thaman, making a return to Kannada Cinema after 'Orange', seemed at the top of his game as he elevated the commercial entertainer to a new height with his vibrant music. Be it the track Power of Youth which became an instant chartbuster for its catchy hook line and powerful base, the super energetic Oorigobba Raaja which has both Puneeth and Sayyeshaa slaying the dance floor, or even the melodic, romantic Neenaade Naa (sung by Armaan Malik and Shreya Ghoshal), there is something for everyone. And to make things better, 'Yuvarathnaa' also boasts of the soulful, almost anthem-like 'Paatashaala' (sung by Vijay Prakash).

Ninna Sanihake - Raghu Dixit

Suraj Gowda ensured that his debut directorial made impressions on all accounts and the soulful soundtrack only elevated his film to a new level. Raghu Dixit, living up to his name and fame, delivered a wholesome package comprising his quintessential melodies along with a few surprises too - the composer rendered his very first out-and-out rap song for the film! while the track Nee Parichaya, sung by Siddhartha Belmannu and Rakshitha Suresh, stood out as one of the year's best and most popular, the title song and Maley Maley too were received very well by the digital audience.

Salaga - Charan Raj

Duniya Vijay's debut outing as a director stood out right from the word go with all the fans receiving the film's music tremendously well. Be it the super popular title track, sung by rapper Yogi B and Sanjith Hegde, or the peppy, electronica-infused promotional song Tininga Mininga Tishaaa..., there is so much to celebrate about Charan Raj's idiosyncratic work that lifts the gangster narrative to a whole new level.

Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana - Midhun Mukundan

For a year that was filled with a lot of despair - especially with the pandemic playing a major spoilsport and later with Sanchari Vijay and Puneeth Rajkumar's highly tragic deaths - the unprecedented success of 'Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana' has been a much-needed boost. Raj B. Shetty, in a career-defining film as both actor and director, rendered a nuanced portrait of the Mangaluru underworld and a lot of the film's authenticity comes from the eclectic soundtrack. Working with composer Midhun Mukundan for the second straight time, Raj's vignetted narrative was able to accommodate an exciting, fresh, and experimental soundtrack that ranges from mellow and light (Endu Bareda) to intense and opulent (the climax score, Sojugada Soojumallige, Demon in Me) in the same breath. Much like the film's cultural impact, the outstanding soundtrack too has cast a great impression on everyone.
