Actor Ramya has received widespread support after filing a police complaint against online abuse and threats. The harassment followed her public statement seeking justice for Renukaswamy; a murder case in which actor Darshan Thoogudeepa is an accused. The abuse included rape threats and character assassination, prompting her to take legal action.
The move triggered a wave of solidarity. The hashtag #WeStandWithRamya began trending across social media, with support pouring in from netizens, industry peers, women’s rights groups, and politicians. Many condemned the targeted misogyny and called for stricter measures against digital abuse.
Actor Shivarajkumar and his wife issued a joint statement. It read,“It is not right to attack any woman. A woman should be respected as a human being first. Your stand is right, Ramya—we stand by you.” Vinay Rajkumar added, “A world that denies women equality should be crushed before it takes shape.”
FIRE (Film Industry for Rights & Equality) also extended support and submitted a letter to the home minister urging immediate action. The Karnataka State Commission for Women has taken cognisance of Ramya’s complaint and is reportedly in touch with her. Her action has reignited discussions around gendered hate and the cost of speaking up as a woman in public life.
A 4-page complaint filedIn a four-page complaint letter, addressed to the city police commissioner, Ramya, mentioning the ordeal she was put through, wrote: “The messages sent to me are so disgusting and misogynistic that I am unable to even reproduce the same in the complaint.” She listed 43 social media accounts responsible for the abuse and requested their immediate takedown, along with legal action against the individuals behind them.
Will SC cancel Darshan’s bail?The Supreme Court is currently examining the bail granted to Darshan Thoogudeepa and six others by the Karnataka High Court in murder case. The court has reserved its order on the plea filed by the Karnataka government seeking to cancel the bail. The actor, who returned to Bengaluru 2 days ago after wrapping up Devil shooting in Thailand, is currently out on bail.
