Veteran actor Anant Nag continues to surprise audiences with new milestones with each passing year. The latest is that the actor has made a foray into Tulu cinema. Titled English, the movie is being directed by Sooraj Shetty of Pilibail Yamunakka fame. “The theme of the film is the importance of retaining the authenticity of one’s mother tongue and ensuring that it continues even in the future generations.

Today, in most homes, English has become the language with which we converse even with our kids, thus losing the relevance of our mother tongue. Be it Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Kodava or even the Beary language, it becomes essential to keep them alive in our homes, even though English has taken over our lives,” explains Sooraj. Anant Nag, he says, was the unanimous choice by the team because of the gravitas he lends with his sheer presence.
“We did think of local artistes but realised that Anant sir was the best to portray this role. He plays a school master, who expounds how one’s mother tongue is of utmost importance to carry forth our culture and tradition, while English is a language of necessity in this society. He has explained the concept beautifully,” adds Sooraj. Anant has spoken both in Tulu and Kannada in the film and has already shot for crucial scenes in Mangaluru. “He was very particular about the dialogues and once he heard them, was convinced and came on board our project,” wraps Sooraj.
