Kannada actress
Ranya Rao has found herself at the center of a major controversy after being arrested for allegedly smuggling gold. The case has gained national attention due to her alleged involvement in illegal activities, connections to influential figures, and claims of protocol violations at the airport. Here’s everything you need to know about the case:
Arrest at Bengaluru Airport
On March 3, 2025, Ranya Rao was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for allegedly smuggling 14.8 kilograms of gold worth around ₹12.56 crore from Dubai. She was reportedly detained based on a tip-off received by authorities.
Interrogation and allegations of harassment
During questioning, Rao allegedly broke down in court, claiming that she was verbally harassed and traumatized by DRI officials. She accused them of using intimidation tactics during the interrogation. However, the DRI refuted her claims, asserting that the entire questioning was conducted in the presence of legal representatives and recorded on CCTV.
Involvement of Her Step-Father, an IPS officer
One of the most significant aspects of this case is Ranya Rao’s alleged misuse of VIP privileges at the airport. Her stepfather, senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, is now under scrutiny for possibly using his position to bypass security protocols and help facilitate the smuggling operation.
Talking to ANI, Ramachandra Rao said, "Ranya got married to Jatin Hukkeri 4 months ago. She never came to our house after the marriage. We are completely unaware of her and her husband Jatin's business affairs. This has come as a complete shock and a matter of great disappointment and dismay for us. If there has been any violation, the law will take its course."
Reports suggest that the Karnataka government has ordered an investigation into whether she took advantage of her stepfather’s influence to avoid thorough security checks.
Investigations into protocol violations
Given the high-profile nature of the case, authorities are also examining whether airport officials allowed Rao to bypass security checks due to her influential connections. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been directed to probe these allegations, focusing on the role of airport security personnel and officials involved in handling her arrival from Dubai.
Arrest of an Associate
As the investigation deepens, the DRI has also taken Tarun Konduraju, an associate of Ranya Rao who accompanied her on her trip to Dubai, into custody. Authorities suspect that he may have played a role in the smuggling operation.
