Puta 109

Sri is a novelist whose wife has been murdered. JK is an astute cop who is trying to figure out who killed her. There is more than just what meets the eye in this tale that involves just two characters mainly on screen.
Dayal Padmanabhan has earned himself the experimental filmmaker tag. And Puta 109 too lives up to that expectation. Dayal has tried to create a narrative that majorly involves two people in a conversation, but the dialogues between them is enough to create the visuals of a the proceedings. The attempt is brave and different. Just two people conversing can become monotonous, but the film is short in length and Dayal has ensured the narrative is entertaining.
The premise of the story is simple. A woman has been murdered and her husband is trying to solve it with the help of the police. The conversation between the investigation officer and the husband forms the major part of the narrative. Of course, there is an interesting twist too.
A film like this also rests on how good the two protagonists are. Naveen Krishna and Karthik Jayaram hold their own and ensure they keep the audience's attention intact with their measured performances. Vaishnavi Chandran Menon seems miscast in the role as the murdered wife, for she seems too young for her part. The dialogues are a big plus to the film though, as is the camerawork.
Puta 109 is a commendable effort, given how the film tries to tread unexplored territories in the Kannada film industry.
