Mounam

Raju (Balaji Sharma) is the apple of his father's eye. He is studious young man, who stands up for the causes he believes in. This story takes a rather unexpected turn when his dad and he fall in love with the same girl.

The film begins with an eerie scene wherein Avinash is seen lugging a heavy sack to a remote location and finally setting in on fire. Then begin a series of flashbacks that capture the scenes leading up to this opening sequence. College student Raju fall in love with Mayuri, a girl he meets on campus. The duo begin spending time together, and it is his dad Avinash, who is strongly affected by the sudden absence of his son. For Avinash, a single parent who has dedicated his life for the upbringing of his only son, not having his son around leaves him feeling lonely and unpurposeful. In a strange turn of events, though, Avinash too falls in love with Mayuri — the very girl his son is dating. How does this change the deep bond that Avinash shares with his son? And how does this lead on to the opening sequence of this film? This marks the rest of the story.

The story setting promises a comedy-of-errors kind of narrative. But this one is a thriller instead, and a forced one at that. The pace is rather slow, and the story has a couple of mandatory song-and-dance routines thrown in which further slows down the narrative.

Avinash delivers what his role demands. Balaji Sharma makes for a good casting in terms of his looks, but will need to hone his acting skills a wee bit more to be able to command a solid Friday opening. Mayuri too fits in just right, but high-pitched dubbing plays a hindrance to her performance.

The movie might have looked promising on paper, but a light-hearted style of storytelling might have made this a more palatable fare.
