Karthik, a sincere and honest police sub-inspector, faces an unusual challenge in life when his gun goes missing. On the other hand is Murthy, the cold-blooded criminal, who has purchased the stolen gun. Will Karthik nab Murthy?
Harikrishna S makes his debut as a filmmaker with an unusual film that features the comic star Jaggesh in shades of grey. And Vasishta N Simha, who is popular for his dark characters, plays the protagonist. Does this subversive narrative work? It does. The film is novel, akin to some of the noir thrillers being doled out by the new Tamil and Hindi makers.
The film begins with the protagonist Karthik narrating the story of how he got suspended from his police duty and then ensues a tale of mind games in the chase of a criminal mastermind. The story moves mainly in a linear way after it establishes Karthik's character. The narrative is mostly edgy and holds the attention of the viewers for most of its duration.
Where 8MM Bullet falters is by force-fitting an extended romance track with two songs that plays a speed breaker in the pacy narrative by slowing it down. While the film remains realistic in its treatment throughout, the two romantic duets and a commercialised fight sequence seem a little unnecessary. But, these seem minor faults in a tale that is novel and has a unique factor compared to the other crime thrillers being doled out in the industry.
Vasishta N Simha is restrained in his performance and does a commendable job. Jaggesh as the conniving Murthy is a treat in his new avatar. The ensemble cast led by Rockline Venkatesh are aptly cast. If cinema noir is your type and you enjoy narratives that try to break the stereotypes, 8MM Bullet is well up your alley.
