Kanika Kapoor becomes first Indian to perform at Buckingham Palace

Indian singer Kanika Kapoor of ‘Baby Doll’ fame has reportedly become the first Indian artist to perform at the Buckingham Palace in London at the 10th-anniversary celebration of the British Asian Trust started by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. She performed popular English and Sufi songs with British music producer Naughty Boy curating the music for the event.
Looking glamorous in a silver floor-length gown by British designer Jenny Peckham, Kanika was honoured to have an audience with the Prince and his wife.
She shared pictures of her meeting with the Royals with a comment that read, "Honoured to perform with @naughtyboymusic at the #BuckinghamPalace in #London celebrating the 10th anniversary of a fantastic #charity started by HRH The Prince of Wales. The @thebritishasiantrust is transforming lives across #India and other parts of #SouthAsia #10YearsofChange."

We all know Kanika Kapoor as the girl with the golden voice, but few of us are aware of the fact that she married Raj Chandok and moved to London when she was only 18. She was a housewife then. However, they parted about five years ago and finally divorced two years later. In an interview with Bombay Times, Kanika had said that she decided to move on, as Raj was with someone else. Now they have come to terms with the divorce and are back to being friends.

She feels that she is actually a normal, simple-hearted, small town girl, who has been exposed to a lot and has been through a lot very early in life. Kanika Kapoor is a trained classical singer. She grew up learning classical music right from the age of six. At 11, she was singing pure classical on the All India Radio. At the age of 12, she started doing shows with Anup Jalota, who was like a second father to her as he is her father’s childhood friend from Lucknow. She came to Mumbai to launch herself as an artist and cut an album with Lalit Sen. She has done her Masters in music, so she can read, write and teach Indian classical music. She has even converted her garage in Lucknow into a studio, where she sings and records.

Kanika Kapoor recently performed at the BBC Prom with BBC Asian Network at the famous Royal Albert Hall along with English DJ and songwriter - Naughty Boy. She paid homage to Yash Chopra where she sang all super hit songs of his films (including 'Kabhie Kabhie' and 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'). She said, "I was truly humbled to be invited to perform at the legendary Royal Albert Hall along with Naughty Boy and Emeli Sande and have the opportunity to pay tribute to Yashji.
