English musician Sting, who has enamoured many with songs like “Every Breath You Take” and “Desert Rose”, is on a surprise visit to God’s Own Country, Kerala, with Irish singer Bob Geldof.The former frontman of the rock band The Police, reached Thiruvananthapuram on the weekend to join writers and cultural figures at the Hay festival.
On Sunday night, the musician attended a concert by friend Geldof with wife Trudie Styler.
“My dear friend Sting will now join me for a song,” Geldof announced to the great surprise and joy of the fans who had gathered there.
The two went on to sing Geldof’s “Everybody’s Got A Hole To Fill, It Doesn’t Matter If Your Name Is Jack or Jill” enthralling the audience at the Nishagandhi amphitheatre of Kanakakunnu Palace in Thiruvananthapuram.
Kerala has seen a string of global celebrities visiting the state in the last few years, including Beatles member Paul McCartney. Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes expressed his desire to visit the state during a visit to the Kerala Pavilion at the World Travel Mart in London last week. Chelsea striker Didier Drogba called Kerala “everybody's dream place” in September. “Kerala is, today, a destination, that’s intellectually appealing,” said Kerala Tourism secretary Venu V.
The Hay Festival, which concluded on Sunday, saw the presence of writers like Vikram Seth, William Darlymple and Sebastian Faulks.
