Singer Jagjit Singh is the latest to join the chorus of celebrities campaigning against cruelty to animals, and his animals of choice to petition for, apparently, are elephants.
In an earnest letter to railway minister Mamata Banerjee, Singh has written that he was “appalled” when he heard from his friends at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, that elephants were being hit and killed by trains.

“I trust you agree that these animals must be protected, and I hope you will take immediate steps to put safeguards into place,” said the letter.
Singh, in his letter, goes on to demand that conductors and drivers of trains be notified that the speed of the trains was being monitored, to discourage over-speeding. “Allowing trains to move up to 50kph in north Bengal elephant corridors virtually guarantees that more deaths will occur, because even the fastest elephants won’t stand a chance,” he wrote, ending with, “I am confident that you will take steps to address this situation without delay, and I look forward to hearing that the process is underway.” Maybe the government will listen if he sings it, wotsay?
