Guru Randhawa in legal trouble: Ludhiana court summons singer over ‘drug-related’ lyrics in ‘Sirra’ - Report
TRIGGER WARNING: This article contains references to drugs.
Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa, who recently faced backlash for his music video 'Azul', is now reportedly in fresh legal trouble. A Ludhiana court has issued a summon against him over alleged “drug-related” references in one of his songs.
As per reports, the case concerns his track 'Sirra', which a local resident claims contains “derogatory, drug-related lyrics.”
Rajdeep Singh Mann, a resident of Samrala in Ludhiana district, filed the complaint. He alleges that the lyrics of 'Sirra' glorify drug culture. The particular lines in question are, “Oh jatta de aa kaake balliye… jammeya nu gurti ch mili afeem hai…” which translates to, “We are the sons of Jats. We got opium as our first food when we were born.” According to the complaint, these words insult Sikh traditions.

Resident claims song promotes drug culture
Rajdeep Singh Mann, a resident of Samrala in Ludhiana district, filed the complaint. He alleges that the lyrics of 'Sirra' glorify drug culture. The particular lines in question are, “Oh jatta de aa kaake balliye… jammeya nu gurti ch mili afeem hai…” which translates to, “We are the sons of Jats. We got opium as our first food when we were born.” According to the complaint, these words insult Sikh traditions.Advocate says lyrics insult Sikh tradition
The complainant's advocate explained the objection to the lyrics. “We demand an FIR against Randhawa. The lyrics insult a pious Sikh tradition. The practice of giving gurti is deeply emotional and associated with respect and purity. The song implies that newborns in Jat families are given opium, which is unacceptable,” as quoted by The Indian Express.Court orders singer to appear personally
Following the complaint, Rajinder Singh, Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate of Samrala, issued the summons under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Guru Randhawa has been asked to appear in person or through counsel for the hearing. The court hearing is scheduled for 2 September, when the complaint will be formally examined.Streaming platforms named in complaint too
The petition also lists online streaming and social media platforms that host the song. Apple Music, YouTube, Amazon Music, Instagram, Spotify India, and Warner Music India have all been named.Singer’s other controversies
This legal issue adds to Guru Randhawa’s recent controversies. His music video 'Azul' had faced severe backlash online for allegedly sexualising a schoolgirl. The video depicts Randhawa as a photographer visiting an all-girls school to take class photos, which critics said objectified the students.DISCLAIMER: If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse, please seek help from available helplines or support organizations.
