Armaan Malik on six years of Control: It gave me an identity beyond playback singing
As his English single Control completes six years, Armaan Malik looks back at the song that marked a turning point in his career, both emotionally and creatively. He shares, “It was a defining moment for me. It was my debut English single, and I still remember how nervous yet excited I felt putting it out into the world.”
At a time when there was no clear template for independent English music from India, the phase felt both uncertain and exciting.
Reflecting on its impact, Armaan adds, “It feels like a turning point not just for me, but in a small way for Indian artists as well. It broke a certain perception that we’re only tied to film music. It showed that we can exist in the global pop space too, in our own voice.”
The song continues to hold strong personal value for him. “Everything felt new. It was the first time I was putting out music that was just me, no character, no film, just my own story.”
Over time, his creative process has also evolved. “Back then, I was exploring and following instinct. Now I feel more aware of who I am as an artist. I don’t feel the need to chase a sound anymore. I’d rather create something that feels true to me.”
That shift has also made his storytelling more personal. “I’m not afraid to be vulnerable or to leave things a little imperfect if that’s what the song needs.”
For Armaan, Control marked the beginning of a more individual artistic voice. “It gave me an identity of my own. It was the beginning of me stepping out as an artist beyond playback singing.”
Looking back, he sees it as an important step in shaping his path. “It gave me the belief that I could carve out my own space and not be limited by where I come from or what people expect from me. Even today, it reminds me of that hunger and clarity.”
